I recently got a 870 express mag 20 gauge, and it will only except one shell in the magazine with or without plug.. the spring it 26 1/2 inches, and the follower is stock. I am think about buying a follower but dont know if thats what it is. Please help, thanks.
 
If you try to push in more than one, does it feel like it is hitting a hard stop or is it just too stiff? If you take the spring out of the magazine but leave the follower in place and hold the gun pointed slightly muzzle up so gravity holds the follower in the normal position, can you then push more rounds in or is it still stop at one?
 
Its a firm stop about 1/8 inch after you put the first in.. and I noticed some small raises in the tube but not when ther shell is.
 
But have just realized that thats not whats stopping them cause i put rounds in backwards haha.. so it must be catching on follower or spring is binding..
 
It takes remington slugger rounds.. but not winchester.. and i just bought 115 winchesters :mad: Anyone know of a way to get them to work??
 
Well its gotta have something to do with winchester brass.. but the mag tube is rusty gonna clean the heck out of it for a while and see where i get from there.. Thanks
 
If your mag tube is rusty (I hope you mean the inside only) and it has what you call small raises it doesn't sound like it was well cared for. You may want to take it to a gunsmith to get those "raises out". If you dpon't know what you are doing, you can turn a small job into an expensive one. The mag tube on the 870 is braised/weleded to the receiver and you don't want to break it lose.
 
Well the owner before me was my father and the owner before him was aweful.. he sighted it in went out hunting didnt see anything. Put it in a soft gun case and left it under the stairs and it now has rust spots all over the gun. My father didnt make it any better, he just put it in his safe (dehimidified), so I am having to take extra care of it to make up for their lack. I did get the majoraty of the bumbs out when i cleaned it with Hoppes but Im going to hit it a few more times and with the raises out it still doesnt take Winchester ammo :mad: I cant figure out why it wont take winchester ammo..
 
I saw that happen once several years ago with a brand new 20 gauge Express. The dealer sent it back to the factory to have the magazine tube at the loading port opened up a couple of thousandths of an inch, apparently there was enough of a dimensional difference between that particular gun and a certain brand of ammunition that it caused problems.
 
Well this is a pretty ole boy.. not new at all lol has rust on the outside and what not :( but today I got a rem slugger.. then a winchester slug then another winchester slug then tried to put the winchester field target loads and nada... and they never went back in :(
 
Has to be something very simple. There is nothing complex about the system. If you look at it carefully enough and eliminate possibilities as you go, you'll get it figured out.
 
Well I did something I shouldnt have which was hit it wwith fine grit sandpaper.. :o and winchester slugs feed throught it pretty good now.... But those darned winchester target and field loads, just dont wanna cooperate... If you apply quite the pressure when loading they will load up fine and cycle fine.. as far as I know, but your thumb does get sore from loading. I have come to the conclusion that this ammo is cheap, sucky and will not buy anymore of. But thank you all for the help.. P.S. Does anyone have a Callahan follower????
 
Are you talking about the Winchester loads sold in 4 packs at WalMart? The Federals sold at WalMart are reported to have less problems. They supposedly caused the most problems with spent shotshells sticking in the chamber but I never heard of this problem with loading the magazine. My experience is only with the 12 Ga 870 Express.
 
Well its the winchester 4 pack but not at walmart.. just about the same. I shot 1 and it didnt stick at all and did fine.
