870 Price Check

A friend has an early 50's vintage Wingmaster, frame only (all parts minus the barrel) plus an extra fore-end, for which he is asking $110.00 (I have a barrel). Walnut stocks, plastic butt-plate (no recoil pad). Approx overall condition 90%. Blue exhibits some minor wear. Action slick & tight. 'Been cleaned, lubed & inspected. Early-style fore-end, which I like. Is this a fair price? Thanks...

Personally? ABSOFREAKINLUTELY!!!! I lust after the earlier wingmasters. There is nothing finer in a pump gun than an early 2 3/4" wingmaster IMO. The price is good but not great, still I would buy it. Barrels that will match the finish quite well are very easy to find and usually under $100 in great shape. Some of the rougher ones are $50 or so. I would buy one in skeet (hardest to find), one in modified, and one in full. Mod and full are a dime a dozen, very easy to find. With these three barrels I can do anything that needs done so long as lead shot is used, and I am still under $400 for a true classic. Model 12 Winchesters move me the same way, but they are LOTS more expensive. I don't think a guy could have too many 870's either. If you have a barrel already this is a no-brainer IMO.

A 50s WM, sans bbl for $110? ABSOLUTELY!! Bbls are not hard to come by, nor expensive. I'd charge it to VISA and face the wrath of She Who Must Be Obeyed for that price.

Installing a good pad and getting a bbl of whatever strikes your fancy means you have a multi generational food producer and protective tool.
