870 or H&R Ultra Slug

I already have an 870 with 23" cantilever barrel. It came in a combo with a
21" turkey barrel. I am thinking about trading in the 23" barrel towards an H&R USH 12 guage. My local gun shop said that they will give me $140 trade in so that leaves me to make up $70 ($210 is what the USH is priced at). Should I do this? Will the USH be that much more accurate than the barrel I already have?

Any opinions are appreciated.

Hmmm....good question. I cannot give an apples to apples comparison of the two, but I myself am heavily considering buying an ultra slug because of the results a friend has with his. He can easily shoot under 2" at 100 yards with ammo the gun likes....

....however, there is one MAJOR drawback to the ultra slug IMHO. It is accurate, but it is HEAVY. It weighs as much as a varmint rifle (it actually LOOKS heavier, if that makes sense :)). That bull barrel is huge and you can tell if you have to lug it around all day. If you are happy with the 870's accuracy, keep it. If you are not and think the ultra slug could improve on what you have, then go that route. If you have to do a lot of hoofing when you hunt, the weight might be a factor.

But the accuracy (and simplicity) of the ultra slug is a thing of beauty.

Thanks, Servo

I have also read that everytime I remove the barrel on the 870 (to clean or switch to the 21") that I need to sight it in again, Is this true? With the cost of high end sabot slugs would it be more cost effective in the long run to get the H&R?

I have never heard that about the 870 needed resighting. Since the scope is mounted to the barrel, nothing should change with removing it. I had a cantilever barrel for my mossy 500 at one time and never remember having to rezero. If I had a standard rifled barrel and had the scope mounted to the mossberg reciever, I would have probably had to resight. You could probably rtest it with a box of sabots (or 2). Shoot a couple. Take off the barrel and put it back on, then shoot a couple of more and see if it is impacting the around the same spot. Unless you have problems, I don;t see the advantage in trading for the H&R simply because of the weight. However, those ultra slugs sure are tack drivers....go with the gun you want. If you want an ultra slug and don't mind the weight...by all means get it. They are definately a cool, effective hunting tool.

I Have 5 12 ga. Slug guns and most are very nice. I love my 870 Wingmaster magnum with the 20 inch Hasting Paradox riffled barell but i must say. I bought the Ultra slug 20 ga. model just because i didnt have a 20 ga. in my collection. Well I must say, it is now my favorite!!!! I am shooting Lightfield 7/8 ounce slugs anywhere from 50 to 160 yards with awsome accuracy. Let me tell you, yes they may be heavy but the weight is perfectly ballanced right where it should be(evenly on both arms). I never dreamed a 20 ga. would shoot so flat and accurate. These guns are hard to beat. I have a buddy who has the Ultra 12 ga. and the 2 3/4" slug is more accurate than any 3" he can find. 12 or 20????? You will probably absolutly love either one of them...I am somewhat of a power freak too, this is why i still cant believe how much i like the 20 ga.
