870 or 500

I am looking to get a new shotgun, all I have is an old 16G and it is starting to be a pain to find the ammo I need for it.

I am torn between a Moss 500 or a Rem. 870

I believe the 870 is about 220 after rebate, and the 500 is about 190.

I would be using it for mostly birds, skeet and trap, and maybe deer. I am not familiar with what I can and can not shoot out of either shotguns cause I know some you cant shoo slugs or shot out of.

Which gun do you recommend, and why, and also which chokes should I look into buying for the purposes mentioned above.

I really need some help so please respond

Mossberg sells their 500 in a "Combo" package that includes a 28" Vented Rib barrel choked Modified, and a 18" cylinder barrel. I bought one last year for $218.00 out the door. The 500 is a very reliable, proven gun. The thing you have to remember with the Remington 870 is there are 2 models, the "Express" and the "Wingmaster". The Wingmaster is a much better gun. The "Express" is a much rougher finished gun that contains many plastic and MIM, (Molded Injected Metal) parts. The Wingmaster cannot be compared to an Express in terms of quality. If given the choice between the Express 870 and the Mossberg 500, I would go with the 500. Bill T.

I believe this is only the Express. I do not have the ads in front of me, they have just been word of mouth from my bro who has em back home. I have heard a lot of feedback from what you have told me previously about other questions I have had, and respect a lot of what you say. I will def keep what you said in my head, I do not know much about the two in terms of difference or what, I am just looking for which ever one is a better overall all purpose hunting/shooting rifle...

Also any info about which Chokes to get?

Mossberg makes great shotguns, but I went with the Remington since I was told they are built much tougher. The action is smoother on the Remington too. Since the price difference isn't much, I would go with Remington.

"Mossberg makes great shotguns, but I went with the Remington since I was told they are built much tougher."

The US Military chose the Mossberg over the Remington, and every other entry. Bill T.

"Mossberg claims that the Model 500 is the only shotgun to pass the US Army's Mil-Spec 3443E test, "a brutal and unforgiving torture test with 3,000 rounds of full power 12 gauge buckshot". The updated 3443G specification requires a metal trigger guard, so only the Model 590A1 variants, which use metal trigger groups instead of the standard Model 500's plastic trigger groups, will fit the requirements. However, the Remington 870 was not submitted to the military for the 3443E tests. Remington may have refrained from participating because they did not wish to risk their their already-strong reputation--winning a military contract would have had little impact on Remington's strong police and civilian market, but failing the mi-spec test could have had a serious negative impact on sales.

While the Army and Marines officially switched to the semiautomatic M1014 Combat Shotgun in 1999, various branches of the US military are still acquiring pump shotguns. The Navy acquired several thousand Mossberg 590A1 shotguns in 2004, and the US Army placed an order in 2005 for 14,818 units at a price of just over US$316 per unit."

I would opt for the 870, I have three of them. The quality and the smoothness of the slide did it for me. I have a 870 tactical magnum, 870 express fully rifled, and an 870 express.

870

The Mossy feels cheap and clanky in comparison. The Remingtons action is smoother and tighter feeling. The 870's trigger is also smoother and the safety is easier to manipulate than the 500's switch. Barrel selection is better with the 870 too.

Hey new guy here. I just went though the same dilemma:rolleyes: 870 vs500
in the end, after alot(i mean a lot )of reading posts from this and other forums I decided to order the 870. It seems that remington has a bigger following then the mossys.:D

The 870 is the standard by which all other pumps are judged. It's fragile as an anvil, ephermal as Stonehenge, and cost per shot runs 1/1oo of a cent.

The point where 870s start breaking irrepairably is around the 250,000 round mark.

Addons and accessories fill a few catalogs. One can get anything from a choke tube to marblecake walnut sculpted to one dimensions by picking up the phone and working the plastic.

The 500 is a darn good shotgun too, if not quite as durable, adaptable or cute.

Get the one that FEELS best....

If you decide on the Remington, Dick's Sporting Goods (if one in your area) has the Remington 570 on sale for $249. They're also giving a $25 Dick's coupon, plus the $30 rebate from Remington. Based on all I read here, I couldn't pass it up.

ya it is at dicks, but I didnt think they were giving that muchoff of it. I thought it was maybe like 220 after a rebate i did not know it had 2 of them.

Glad to see some Moss representing... I am most likely going to go with the moss due to it being cheaper, and i strongly believe they are prob very similar anyway.
