870 Marine Magnum Factory Change?

Anyone know why some new 870 Marine Magnums come from the factory with magazine end caps that are flush with the barrel rather than extending beyond the barrel as they had for many years?

Got a photo?

Unless they have changed the design of the extension, the extension can be flush or out past the muzzle depending on how tight it is screwed on.

I'm hearing from several sources that Remington has changed their barrels from a true 18" to 18 1/2".

If so, this is the first such change since the 870 was introduced in 1950.

Apparently this took place very recently.

Remington originally designed their factory magazine extensions in the mid- 1960s to be used with the bayonet adapter sleeve that when installed comprised the Model 870 Mark 1 of USMC fame. The stepped-down extension on the front of the magazine extension fits the ring on the M7 bayonet. I've been wondering why Remngton kept using that design since several decades have elspsed since any M870Mk1s have been produced. Maybe they finally got around to changing it, since not too many people are putting bayonets on their 870s any more. Or maybe they just lengthened the barrels on the MM a bit.

Pictures would help...

Here's the current photo on their site.

Everybody who has the express HD can try this. When I got mine from the shop, The magazine extension extended past the muzzle a little bit. I screwed it on tighter and it was flush. That is all. Tighten it some more. Mine is flush and definately has an 18inch barrel.

I hope that they stick with the 18 inch barrel. If they turn to the 18.5 for the police guns, I hope they don't switch to cylinder bores. The remmys are great because they have imp. cyl. bores.
:(
Oh ****goose.

The one being sold on auction arms says 8 shot. That is odd because the remington website states mag capacity of 6. I own one and can only fit 6 2.75 inch shells. The one listed says eight shot as though it were 7 in the mag and one in the chamber. That would have to be redesigned to fit one more in the mag. This is considering that the barrel is also listed as 18 inches and the mag appears shorter than the original.

Official Remington Response

Below is what customer service at Remington Arms Company wrote:

"Due to tolerances in production you may see a difference in how the extension lines up with the barrel. The tolerances that can cause this variance is in the magazine tube threads where the coupling threads to the tube as well as the lip of the extension that the coupling slides up against to prevent it from coming loose from the extension."

"Also these production parts are polished and there can be some slight difference in the length of the barrel and actual extension."

Exactly.

Sounds like a BS answer from the Remmy Rep.

Just saw a HD Express AND a Marine Mag at the local gunboom emporium, and both extensions were flush with the end of the muzzle.

Comparing the two photos, it looks to me like the bead is further out on the flushie, lending credence to the 18.5" barrel theory (though the box label does say 18")

First one to the store with a tape measure wins the prize.

and After (flush): ***see attachment***

It appears there has definitely been a change in length from the 18" barrel to the 18.5" barrel. This elicits the new question of why would Remington not only fail to divulge this information, but actively give false information (polishing) to account for the difference? Maybe it has something to do with the 3rd shooter on the grassy knoll.

Serial numbers are present in both pics. Does someone have the ability to look up the dates of manufacture?

Remington has not been too good in recent years about getting out valid info to the customers.

Part of this looks like having people answering questions who simply don't know what they're talking about.

Recently a caller was told that the 18" Express Synthetic with the standard magazine held 5 rounds in the tube.

Briefly, the web site listed the 18" extended version as holding 8 shots.

The Police web site still says that the Police guns are sprayed with hot cosmoline as a preservative for shipping and storage.
The factory reps say this is no longer done.

It just appears that the gun companies can no longer afford to have knowledgeable, experienced people answering simple questions.

I have mine ... the barrel and magazine are almost exactly even. The barrel depth is exactly 18.5" measured internally. :)
