870 magnum vs standard receiver

Is the standard 870 receiver strong enough
and configured correctly to accept 3 inch
shells? I'm specifically referring to the
Wingmaster and am assuming the use of a
barrel chambered for 3 inch shells.

I believe it is. Wilson Combat/Scattergun Tech, as part of their "Remington Steal" package, offers to convert your 2.75" chambered Remington 870 to a 3.00" chamber. Since the conversion process does not replace the receiver (nor is any material added to the receiver, to my knowledge), it would seem that the stock receiver is strong enough for three inch magnum shells.

That said, I'm not sure what Wilson Combat does to convert the old chamber. Therefore, while the receiver may be strong enough, I do not know whether you can just swap out the barrel and be done with it.

Thanks Justin. This is a start.
My 870s all are fitted with 3 inch barrels.

I infer from what you imply, based upon what
Scattergun Tech states that it some how,
some way can be done......Hmmm.
I wonder if the extractor is a factor?

I appreciate the input.

When I had the forcing cone done on what's now my deer 870,along with a FlexTab conversion, my smith friend switched the receiver to a 3" one by changing the ejector.
The Flextab and ejector were all that was needed.

DaveMcC is correct. The Remington Armorer School teaches that the only difference between a 3" Magnum and a 2 3/4" 870 receiver is placement of the ejector.

Placement or length? How do you change the placement of the ejector in the receiver? (Not trying to be difficult, just curious -- especially since I've thought about buying a 2 3/4" and putting a 3" barrel on it.)

Can I assume that any competant gunsmith
would be able to perform this operation?

Even after the extractor is moved, it should still be able to handle 2 3/4 inch
shells, correct?

Thanks....Sport

Sport, yes and yes. ALL shotguns can handle shells shorter than the length listed, it's longer shells than the bbls chambered for that are the problem.
