870 Magazine Cap to replace Mag. Extension

I am thinking about removing my Magazine Extension from my 870 Express and using a 4+1 configuration (feels better balanced to me).

Since mine will lack the normal retention devices on the factory 4+1 870s, is there a Mag Cap out there that will replace the mag extension with little, or better, no modification to the magazine tube?

Thanks.

All 870 mag caps will fit. There are two types, one for the detent and the other works with black plastic spring/mag cap retainer. If your 870 came with a tube extension from the factory that means it has a detent on the barrel ring. You need to get a 870 cap that is made for the detent.

you can try a wilson combat or vang comp +1 extension.

you get 5+1, about the same balance, and a sling adapter.

I believe you can also get the cap + necessary parts directly from Remington.

Brownells has wave washers that are made to keep the magazine cap tight if your barrel ring does not have the ball detent.Either type of mag cap will stay tight with these.

I'm sure the 870 expresses with factory included magazine extentions dont use the dimples. In this case, you will need a WINGMASTER magazine cap and a magazine spring retainer from Brownells.

Thank you for all the answers. I took apart my gun today to look what kind of retention device mine has and it appears to have the ball detent in the barrel ring.

After some more research, I realize I may need the shorter spring, but do I need the spring retention device as well?

The mag spring retainer is not needed with the ball detent mag cap, just be carefull when you remove the cap to keep the spring from flying out.

The plastic spring retainer is for an Express that has mag tube dimples. The retainer is held in place by the dimples. No dimples means the spring retainer is unless.

If your gun has the detent on the barrel support ring, you'll need an old style magazine cap and an old style magazine spring retainer, along with a standard length (4 shot) magazine spring.

You can buy these new, or check for used take-off parts at most gun shops.

Here's what you need:

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=0/sid=134/schematicsdetail/870_Standard_Weight__12__16__20

Magazine cap, old style, part 33

Magazine spring retainer, old style, part 38.

Magazine spring, Part 37. You can either use the standard or the slightly heavier duty Police version.

The magazine spring retainer fits into the end of the magazine tube CUPPED SIDE DOWN, and holds the spring in by tension of the steel retainer.
