I have a older model 870 and I purchased a new 870 18" barrel. My old barrel had the detent ball and my new barrel does not, how will I keep the mag tube from coming loose.

If anyone else has put a new style barrel on a old style gun can you tell me what you did?

get a mag extension and a mag tube coupler, once its tight,it wont move:)

choate tool makes a great one.some of the newer ones out there are made of plastic, avoid them.

or

get the new style spring follower (with teeth
) they are grey and have 2 grooves down opposite sides..that sets on the barrel end of the spring, not the shell follower, and the new style mag cap with the teeth inside it.the spring tension keeps the two parts from coming loose

I may have extras lying around here, check your email

Sorry that won't work if you have an older style gun.

The Express guns have two "dimples" or lugs pressed into the end of the magazine tube to interlock with the plastic toothed spring retainer.

The lugs hold the plastic spring retainer in the tube AND prevent it from turning.

Without the dimples there's nothing holding the plastic spring retainer in the tube, the retainer will turn, and the magazine cap will unscrew.

I think I answered this on another forum, but in your case about all you can do is tighten the cap down tight and watch it to be sure it doesn't come loose.

Some people use Teflon pipe tape around the threads to help keep the cap from unscrewing.

I was just looking at the wilson combat 1 shot extension and it don't make any use of a detent ball even if the barrel had one. What keeps these from coming loose, and I know you wouldn't need a clamp with a solid short 1 shot extension.

how permanent do you want it? you could get some blue loctite and put a drop onm the threads, tighten it down and let it set for 24 hours.you will be able to get it loose later on but itll take more monkeying around.I doubt it would shoot loose.the red loctite is stronger but requires a torch to heat it up to remove.I use the blue stuff on all my guns.scope mounts, rings, anything that has threads that I want to remain snug...just be sure to clean the threads good, use degreaser and rubbing alcohol to wipe it off then apply the loctite.check with your local auto parts store and ask the clerk for the blue loctite rthat can be removed with hand tools.

Just to share the info, the brand new 20 gauge express 870 do not have "dimples" to deal with.

I noticed that as well and think that it is interesting that they did not change the 20 gauge as well...I prefer the 'old' system with the little 'ball'...

It's been said before, and it's true...the 870 Police is the way to go...it has the best of all worlds...ooops, I'm starting to hijack the thread.

Mastinson: I wonder if you can get your hands on an older 18" barrel...that would solve it.
