870 Finish

What is the best method for cleaning the metal surfaces on the Rem 870. I find that the sandpaper finish is very hard to clean and if I use any kind of cloth my gun ends up covered in lint. I'm not really fond of this kind of finish but I love the gun. Is this really blued? If not, then what? Help!

It's just the basic 870 Express Magnum. The finish of the barrel and receiver is very rough, almost like shark skin.

I brush off rough finishes with a toothbrush and if necessary, use some solvent or just some CLP Breakfree on the brush to help remove heavy fouling.

I also use clean toothbrushes to apply a fresh coat of CLP Breakfree.
The brush allows working the lube into the rough finish.

The Express finish is standard hot salts bluing applied over a bead blasted surface.

As long as you keep the rough surface impregnated with lube, it's pretty durable.

Yes it is blued-over-blasted metal as Dfariswheel has said.

I use CLP (SHAKE WELL) and some patches that I bought at a show. I have had trouble finding them since but they are round and appear to be woven, like a basket. They hold the CLP and grab dirt and do not shed all over the Express finish. I use regular large cotton square patches for the bore & bolt.

lately ive been using an old cut up t-shirt on mine, and it works pretty well without dropping a lot of lint. some fabrics are teribble tho. [with CLP breakfree]
