I have a remington 870 express 12 guage 28" barrel pump shotgun and was wondering if it will shoot 3" shells. On the barrel it says it will shoot 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells in magnum receivers and 2 3/4 shells for all others. I don't know if the receiver is a magnum or standard. The model is just a 870 express. How can i tell? thank you.

On the side of the reciever where it says the name.

870 Express will shoot 2.75''
870 Express Magnum will shoot 3''
870 Express Super Magnum will shoot 3.5''

If I remember correctly.....

"870 Express will shoot 2.75'' "

The 870 Express is a magnum and will shoot 3" shells. Check the serial number and you will see an M. My uncle has one. By '93 when I finally bought mine they'd changed the name to Express Magnum, but the gun is the same.

I have an Express bought new in 1988. At the end of the serial # there is an "M". Means it is a magnum and will shoot 3" shells. It does not say "Magnum" anywhere on the gun. I believe the new ones will say Magnum, the older ones have "M" after the serial # like mine.
