I feel like an idiot, but it's my first shotgun, so...

II. Disassembly of the Remington 870 Shot Gun
1. Engage the safety.
2. Ensure the firearm is unloaded using the steps described in section I.
3. Push the slide aprox. ½ way to the front.
4. Unscrew and remove the magazine cap.
5. Grasp the barrel in front of the magazine tube and pull the barrel from the receiver.

I'm grasping, I'm pulling. The barrel is not coming off.

Sometimes the barrels are in pretty tight, especially if it has not been removed before. Pull harder and twist the barrel back and forth. You will not be able to twist it very much, but that little amount of wiggling sometimes helps.

I tried it again, this time with my roommate helping. We weigh a combined 400 something pounds. That barrel is not coming off the way I'm doing it. Is there a way to not be following those quite obvious instructions?

Very strange. If the action is open and the mag cap removed the barrel should just about fall off. Mine does.

I'm thinking, but I need to leave for a meeting.

It doesn't matter if the action is fully open, halfway open, fully closed.

If by the mag cap we mean the cap at the end of the mag :) ...the 6" of the end of the tube that unscrews and the spring pops out.

Do you have a Remington factory magazine extension on your gun? If you took off the magazine extension tube and the magazine spring has been removed, you still have to remove the knurled cap that the magazine extension tube screws into from the magazine tube itself in order to remove the barrel.

Yes, it has an extension. I think what you're saying may be the solution. I actually thought that could be it, but I tried to twist the knob and that didn't budge either.

I will twist harder when I get home from work.

Thanks everyone.

Several folks lately have reported getting new 870s with the extension sleeve tightened on the magazine/barrel ring so much at the factory that it took padding a pair of pliers with leather or terrycloth to get it unscrewed. It really is supposed to come off, and it turns in the normal counterclockwise direction to unscrew. When you put it back on, it doesn't have to be THAT tight...

"that it took padding a pair of pliers with leather or terrycloth to get it unscrewed"

Ok, where did you hide the video camera in my bedroom? That's exactly what it took. I think it's all figured out now. Thanks so much.

Here's some more advice from someone who did it 20 minutes ago. Be VERY careful of the finish on the barrel and action and all that...it's crap.
