870 Express shell ??

Just picked up my new 870 Express 18" HD. I have been trying to search to see what type of shells I can put through this barrel without it being destroyed, if it will?

Primarly use will be HD but when I go our to the desert to shoot pistol, can I use birdshot and not cause harm?
What type of shell is the best for HD with this shotty?
If I wanted to shoot slugs do I have to buy another barrel?

Sorry for these questions, just taking her apart and getting a good cleaning before the weekend trip. Your answer would be most helpful.

Birdshot will work,T. For now, use the lighter stuff. 1 oz, 2 3/4 dram 2 3/4" shells are what to look for. 7 1/2 or 8 shot will be OK.

The valu packs at Walmart for $16 are good also.
 
Slugs are gonna be fine. You can pretty much shoot anything in the way of birdshot, buckshot, or rifled slugs. You might want to stay away from steel shot, but I'm not sure about that. Sabot slugs are a no-no, but only because they are designed for a rifled barrel, and you probably won't get much accuracy from them. Just don't use shell larger than what the barrel is made for.
