870 Express and steel shot

I know most everything nowadays is rated for steel shot, but my 870 is vintage 1990 or so. I'm too lazy to find the manual so here I am!:p

It is not so inscribed on the barrel, thus my concern.

I am thinking about trying my hand at ducks for the first time in my life. This is to placate my 2-year old Vizsla female, who loves the water and retrieving. This would likely be a one-time deal. If she and I like this, I will go out and buy a purposeful gun, probably a Beretta or Benelli. Any insight will be appreciated.

Express and steel shot

All Remington barrels made after 1950 are steel safe, I don,t see why yours would,nt be. Go on Rem site and as them, then you,ll know for sure.

All of the 870 Expresses can use steel shot. However, Remington makes a Full choke tube that is only for lead, and a "Full - Lead or Steel" choke tube. Or at least they did in '93 when I bought my Express.

I never found that the Full tube patterned very well with steel shot or Hevi-Shot. I got better patterns with Mod and IC.
