870 Express 18 ammo

My experience has mostly been with handguns and some rifles. I'm considering adding a 870 to my home defense line, but have some questions about ammo choices for the Express Sythetic with 18" fixed cylinder choke bbl.

Some people have told me I couldn't use slugs with this type of bbl and choke, others told me I could use slugs but not 00 buck. I want to be able to shoot both slugs and 00 buck, so I welcome any info on how to do this without damaging the gun.

Thanks for helping a newbie!

^+1. Either load will be fine. With the mentioned 870 setup, the only things you would have to be careful about are mixing up rifled slugs with sabots, and making sure you don't try to shoot any 3.5 inch shells.

Welcome to TFL :)

There are many many thousands (maybe even millions?) of 870s with 18- 20" cylinder bored or improved cylinder choked barrels that have been shooting buckshot and slugs without damage to the gun since the model was introduced by Remington more than 50 years ago (I've been doing it myself for over 30 years). The 870 has been a favorite of law enforcement agencies, the military and private citizens for decades. The proper gauge, load and length of shotshell for the gun you have, fired through a bore that's free of obstructions, won't hurt it at all- buckshot and slugs are the riot gun's bread and butter.

You might want to find some better informed folks to talk to about shotguns tho... 8^).
