870 disassembly

I recently bought two older Wingmasters both arriving without manuals. I'd like to switch the stock/forend from one to the other receiver. Remington's on-line owner's manual wasn't helpful so any advice/tips on how to do this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Brownell's sells the proper tools, but I use needlenose pliers and a large screwdriver. Go carefully.

Remove the pad or plate from the stock, exposing the stock bolt. This is hex headed with a slot in it.Using a screwdriver I've ground to fit, I carefully unscrew the bolt until the stock comes loose. Note that if the screwdriver is placed in between the wood and the bolt head and twisted, you can bust wood out.

At this point, I wipe on, wipe off a little lube on the rear of the receiver, and some beeswax on the end grain of the stock. Beeswax on the bolt threads is a good idea also. Reassemble.

The forend can be swapped as a unit, but the old parts are probably work polished to each other, giving a smoother stroke.

Remove the assembly from the receiver and mag tube. Using the tips of the needlenose pliers in the notches of the big nut at the front of the forend, unscrew that big nut. Go carefully.

Once that nut is removed, one can swap wood. Again, lube everything hidden.

HTH...

Manuals

You can also get a free manual for those wingmasters from Remington's page. I got the manuals for my used 1100 and 870. It takes about a week or two to get to you. I used Dave's afforementioned method as well.

Swapping barrels

Dave McC & NorielX,

Thanks for your very helpful comments. Just one clarification in changing parts: Any problem putting a barrell chambered for 3" on to a non-magnum receiver if the 2.75" will be the only shell used? Thanks again.

No.

Use 3" shells with a 3" receiver and a 3" bbl. Doing otherwise is not good for you or your shotgun.

2 3/4" shells can be used in a 3" receiver or bbl, but not the other way....

Dave, isn't the idea behind the magnum receiver that it has the length to handle the 3 inch rounds?

Seems to me that mike wouldn't have a problem firing the 3 inch (if he so desired), it's jjust that the 3 inch shells might not feed correctly.

If he puts the barrel he mentions on the receiver and only uses 2 3/4 shells, he should be fine.... IMHO.

Am I overlooking something?

Giz, it should be like that, but a nagging little voice in my memory banks sayeth nay.

IIRC, when I started putting Frank together, my gunsmith buddy switched the ejector to handle 3" shells. I think he said that otherwise it would be liable to chip off the edge.

Maybe DML or George Stringer can enlighten us all.
