870 combo value

New to this board and am a daily viewer. Have chance to buy a 870 in 20g. Person tells me it is not new,but in good condition. Comes with ventrib barrel and a rifle sighted slug barrel. Have yet to see it and he was of little help on the details. I will get a chance to view it next week and am doing a little research. I know it is a express model with two barrels. The asking price is $200. Are we in the ballpark for a used 870 combo in good condition? Would the shotgun barrel have the Rem choke system and would the slug barrel be rifled or not? I'm not sure what configureation that these came in. Have been a Mossburg guy up till now, and need a little help pricing this. Thanks to all :)

Price varies a lot by location. Frankly, here in South Carolina that is a steal. I'd value it even in 80% condition as a $250.00 deal.

Jump on it!

Welcome newman,
sounds like a pretty good deal to me. IIRC new 870 combos regularly show up for around $300 on sale.
Can't tell ya bout the slug barrel. But I will say that in my experience the 20g forster type slugs often shoot tighter groups than comparable 12g and rifling makes little difference. If a dedicated slug gun for deer hunting etc rifling is OK but a smooth bore more versatile.

Its a dod-eat-dog world...
Makes me glad I'm not a dog.

I'd recommend stopping by your local shop before purchasing the shotgun. You'll be able to compare prices with new 870s and they may have one used that's a better buy.

New 870s around here go for about $270, $250 on sale. I'm not sure if it varies for 20 gauge. Extra barrels in catalogs seem to be in the $200 range, so that may be a good deal.

Brand new 12 guage Express was on sale here a while back for $225 (+tax). That did not include extra barrel, so that is a pretty good deal if it is in good shape. I prefer 12 guage, but 20 is OK too and shells are pretty easy to find unlike 16's.

Go for it. I put slightly more than $300 into the kids' two bbl 20 YE, tho I bought the slug bbl separately. This one has a Remchoked vent rib bbl and a IC fxed choke in the smoothbore slug bbl. Other combos vary.

If the Rottweil Brennekes will group nicely in yours, I recommend them. Peformance diffs between them and the 12s seem minor. Other 20 gauge slugs I've tried seem to leave longer blood trails. They DO kick some.

thanks to all. Thought it was a good deal, just wanted to throw it out to make sure. Any suggestions on loads for partridge? Home defense?

Partridge? 6s or 7 1/2s, IMO. Check the old threads in the Archives for opinions on HD loads,m including some of mine.
