I am looking at midwayusa and see that they have a shotgun barrel i like. Its the Remington 870 12 Gauge 3" 18-1/2" Modified Cylinder with Tritium Rifle Sights Parkerized. I was wondering if i could shoot rifled slugs with this barrel. Some say yes and others say no, i would like to hear feedback on the issue.

Way back when,I put a scope on my 870 riot gun with the thought of keeping it around as a backup during deer season. With standard 1 oz Foster type slug it gave 4 in groups at 50 yds. With the heavier 1 1/8 magnum slugs of the same design the groups size doubled and recoil was much worse.I have no experience with rifled shotgun barrels and sabot slugs but if I lived in one of the states that only allowed deer hunting with shotguns,I would buy one.As it is my setup is adaquate in the"Piney Woods"of East Texas.

If the barrel is smoothbore you can use rifled slugs brennekke makes some very good ones. If the barrel is rifled you will need to use sabot slugs which cost a bit more but give you a better longer shot.

check gun broker, there are a lot of gently used short barrels floating around for far less then on midway, then again, they might not have the sights.
