870 barrel question

I have a question about my 870 wingmaster. I was cleaning it last night and noticed that there is some play (wobble?) in the barrel even when the action is closed. I have never noticed it before. Everything looks to be in order, so I don't know what the cause is unless it is normal. That is my question...is it normal? I know an 870 locks up against the reciever as opposed to the barrel.

"I know an 870 locks up against the reciever as opposed to the barrel."

No, the 870 bolt locks into the barrel's extension.

As for looseness, do you have the magazine cap down tight?

Turn the cap down snug, then give it just a little more of a turn.
Don't over tighten to the point where you need tools to get the cap off, but it should take a strong grip to loosen it.

The barrel should be snug with little or no movement.

Well, I checked the magazine cap and it is not tightening down completely against the barrel sleeve. Suggestions (I got it as tight as I can without over doing it). It has about a 1/32" gap between it and the barrel sleeve.

Also, I noticed that it is possible to remove the barrel with the action closed...is this normal? I am thinking it isn;t. I have had the 870 for awhile and zero problems. I have had a few and know the designe pretty well, but can't see anything that may be wrong other then the magazine cap. THe movement is not that much, but I am paranoid about things liek this. IT really isn't much at all....maybe 1/32" or less of wiggle room.

Something is wrong.

First, take a look at the magazine for anything preventing the cap from screwing down.

On the Wingmaster and all older 870's the magazine spring retainer is a split steel "spring cup". The cupped end should be down, and nothing should be sticking up above the end of the magazine tube.

On the Express guns, there is a "toothed" plastic bushing that stickers up out of the magazine tube. Check this to be sure you can press it down into the magazine tube.

With the barrel OFF, screw the magazine cap on to be sure it will screw all the way down.

Put the barrel on and again check to see if the cap will screw on far enough to snug up against he barrel support ring.

Check the barrel support ring to be sure nothing is interfering with the magazine cap.
Things to look for are burred, bent, deformed, or otherwise damaged support rings.

Check the INSIDE of the magazine cap for burrs or foreign matter that might be preventing the cap from screwing down fully.

problem solved. It was the magazine spring retainer. IT wasn;t in all the way. Thanks for the heads up. Barrel is as tight as it gets now!
