870 All-Arounder Pt.2

A few months back you all guided me on the first steps to making my $1.00 870 more suitable for my intents. It now sports the 21" turkey barrell with the twin beads and I have a skeet and lite modified extended Briley chokes as well as the extra full Remington. I have put probably 700-800 rounds through her at casual (backyard) clays and like it real well. Can even hit my doubles more often than not. Thanks to all. I have been having some troubles with empty cases hanging up in the ejection port. I thought I must have been short stroking (BTW, my partner had a very good time making fun of the little jig-like dance I did once while trying to clear a jam in time to hit the second clay). But, as I was preparing to take it down yesterday for the first time, I noticed that the foreendhangs up a little as it gets to the receiver. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what causes this and what to do to correct. I am thinking of going to a shorter synthetic foreend, but not right away.

Have you dropped the trigger housing and cleaned out from behind the bolt raceway? May be some grit in there or on the magazine tube..

Two of my 870's appear to "hang up" as the pump handle gets close to the receiver but it is really the bolt rubbing against the ejection spring. I do not know if you can do anything about that except make sure the back side (slot) of that bolt is really really smooth. My Express bolts had slots that looked like PENNDOT-maintained roads until I assaulted them with the ol' dremmel.
Interestingly, I have an 870 that does not have an ejector spring. It ejects just fine and never "hangs up".
I'm not sure why they put those springs in there......

Thanks Gents

You gave me some good things to look for, I plan to take her down maybe tonight or certainly tomorrow. This will be the first time for me (insert wisecracks here) and I'm not real mechanical so there may be some more questions. Shoot, I was fairly well suprised that I still had the instruction book after 13 or so years. Excuse me nowwhile I put the dremel in standby mode.

Well, you got me fired up, so I just took my 870 apart for the first time (didn't even hurt). It's pretty simple, but polishing and straightening action bars are more than I want to tackle tonight. It looks like the action bars ARE bent. Geoff80, thanks for the link, that helped alot. I cleaned it up and even got it back together in what appears to be working condition. Hey, if I can do this, anyone can. There WAS a chunk missing out of my spring retainer for the mag tube! It came out when I took the end cap off. I'm not going to worry about it unless somebody here tells me otherwise. PS Just noticed that there was an hour and twenty minutes between me posting about taking it apart and me posting that I had done it and put it back together successfully. OK for a first time.
