835 ported choke.

I'm new to this forum and just as green on choke tubes.I just traded for a used Mossberg 835.3 1/2 " chamber w/ ported barrel.Included in the trade was a Hi-Viz Long Spur choke tube w/ opening of .705 It is also ported. My question is: Is it safe to shoot a ported choke in a ported barrel? Would this be TOO much porting and a waste of time to shoot this ported choke tube? Thanks for your time. TLK

While the supposed merits of porting can be discussed ad nauseum, from a safety perspective, it's fine. Porting doesn't do anything for recoil, it may (used loosely) have some effect on muzzle climb if you're shooting very heavy loads

Fitment and proper fit are 2 different subjects of discussion. Fitment describes the level of quality put into the assembly of a gun.

Proper fit is LOP, cast, comb height etc. describing how a gun fits the shooter and this goes from high end arms all the way down to sling shots and rubberband guns.

Greetings TLK, and welcome aboard.

If I'm reading you question correctly, you want to know if it's okay (safe) to use a ported extended choke tube in conjunction with a barrel that's already ported. I assume that you're concerned that having too much porting might actually be detrimental. Don't worry, you'll not over choke the gun; however, the advantage of the second porting will be minimal at best.

If your gun already has a ported barrel, then there's no way you should think of spending extra for a ported choke. But, since you already have the Hi-Viz unit, there's no reason not to use it when appropriate. Of course, you may have some other shooters looking at your gun and shrugging their shoulders and/or scratching their heads.

Thank-you zippy13.You answered my question, exactly.I plan on buying other chokes for this shotgun, the non ported chokes.I just wanted to make sure it was safe.I'm more than likely to have a lot more questions in the near future.I had to retire (medical) from the R.R. in 2004.I never got to hunt while I was working out of state for 30 years. Now that I've recovered from my medical condition,I'm going to try to decrease the deer population here in S. Ohio.Looks like this forum is a GR8 place to get info and get ???'s answered. Thanks to all who chimed in. TLK
