835 for Home Defense.

My earlier post got me thinking. Has anyone ever tried to make a HD/Tactical SG out of a Mossberg 835? Do they make an 18in barrel for the 835, or will a 500 series berrel fit on an 835 reciever? (Obviously you couldn't fire 3.5 mags) Do model 500 after market items (stocks, mag extensions, etc.) fit on the 835?

I really don't know, but it seems like someone in a recent thread mentioned an 18" cylinder bore barrel they found for an 835...

Don't the newer 835's come with a 20" barrel or so? Mine's the older 26" model.

There aren't any magazine extensions for 500s- magazine size on that design is fixed, unless you change the magazine tube and the barrel.

Most any good pump shotgun will do for HD, if the shooter will do. The most important thing about a defensive shotgun is the 'nut that holds the butt,' not whatever fuzzy dice and fender skirts are bolted onto the gun. Supermaggienumb shotguns are overrated for defensive use IMHO, a 2 3/4" 12 gauge shell will do all that needs to be done in a defensive situation, IF the shooter is up to the task.

835 for home defense.

If you use it and god forbid someone breaks in try 3.5inch 00 buck and at close quaters you would be able to take out that dumb !@#$#@! and remove that wall you wanted to take out to make the rooms bigger :D

I got a doctor buddy of mine, using a 835 for everything, including serious situation use for the home.

Raised as a poor boy in the country, learned to shoot, did not like being hungry, and meat was nice, just only given 2 or 3 shells from a coffee can at the store and expected to get meat, and bring that extra shell or two back.

Did I mention he can shoot? He won this 835. He has all sorts of nice guns, nice shotgun, all kinds.

He has run straights in skeet, trap and 5 stand using this 835. Felled quail, doves, ducks, deer and who knows what else.

"Just a poor country boy, and something about a plain vanilla pump just fits me to a T".

He said that after winning again with the 835, tickled to death to win another gun, this time a 870 in 20 ga. Grandson got that one, getting some lessons on how to shoot from a Grandpa that learned to shoot.

"Get tired of beans, cornbread, and 'tater's, you fell a running deer like you are supposed to...and bring back the deer and the unused shells..."

Unused shells? Needed them in case of varmits, he grew up where sometimes inmates escaped down the way.

"We slept okay at night...didn't worry matters during the day".

I found a 24" cylinder-bore barrel on Auction Arms for around $75. I wanted one I could shoot slugs through, and still be a little handier for HD. I still haven't shot any slugs out of it - the indoor ranges won't let me, and the outdoor range is a good hour and a half away. I have a nice selection waiting, for when I do make the trip, though.

I ALMOST decked out my 835. It would be sweet. 3.5 inch chamber. A +2 mag extension. (I've seen +4 mag extensions but can't remember were.) I decided against it though. The only thing you need on a HD shotgun is a flashlight. IMO the mag extensions are over rated. Something tells me if you can't hit a BG with the first two shots, you won't hit him with he other 7 shots either.

hd 835

hey ceetee when I got my 835,it had the 24incher on it and the dude at the gunshop said not to shoot slugs out of it because of the porting on the barrel  Is he full of poo or what?

You shouldn't shoot slugs because the barrel is overbored, and therefore accuracy will be poor with the accu-mag barrel. You should get either the normal 12 gauge cylinder bore barrel for rifled slugs or a rifled barrel for sabot slugs.

I, personally, just keep a spare 870 with a rifled barrel around for slug duty, and keep my 835 for shot duty.

You gotta love the new mossy-oak breakup finished 835s, I love mine.

My gun came with the overbored 28" barrel. As far as I know, the barrel I bought is a true cylinder bored barrel, not overbored. I asked the store selling it (an actual gunshop, not just some guy) if I could shoot slugs through it, and he said I could.

Maybe one of the experts here will know how to tell if the barrel is overbored or not...
