Editor's note: Chadbourn is a very small town in eastern NC. This appeared in the local paper and was sent to me by a friend who lives in the area. I can't help but speculate that the rash of robberies against the elderly in the area will come to a halt. - Strayhorn
A gunfight between an 83-year-old man and two young intruders in his Grists area home near Chadbourn late Wednesday night left one of the intruders dead.
Harvey Washington Faulk was awakened by banging at the door of his home in the 2000 block of Braswell Road at about 11:30 p.m., Columbus County Sheriff Jimmy Ferguson said.
Two young men pushed their way into the home, pointed a gun at Mr. Faulk and demanded money.
While the intruders went through a pair of Mr. Faulk's pants, Mr. Fauk grabbed his .38 caliber pistol.
Gunfire was exchanged inside the small home and the two intruders took off running.
Mr. Faulk called his family to come over. At 1:36 a.m. they called 911 to report a body lying in the yard.
The body was identified as 19-year-old Travis Frink, of Grists Road. His body was sent to Chapel Hill for an autopsy, Sheriff Ferguson said. Investigators are still looking for the second man.
Mr. Faulk had not been charged Thursday and the sheriff's department and the SBI are still investigating the case.
Several elderly Chadbourn area residents have been victimized by break-ins recently, but it is too soon to tell if there is a connection, Sheriff Ferguson said.
