A story from the autobiography of the late, great Elmer Keith emphasizes the importance of using enough gun.
Seems there was a little dog that kept sneaking in and stealing the eggs out of Elmer's henhouse. So he set up an ambush from his front porch with his 8-bore. The percussion cap fired but failed to ignite the charge, requiring him to fit a new cap and try again. By this time the egg-stealing mutt was about 200 yards away. Elmer under-compensated for the range, and hit short, but the 2-ounce (!) bullet richocheted and hit the dog in the hams. It got away (and recovered from its wound), but never again raided the henhouse.
Moral of the story: you need much more gun than an 8-bore to take down a dog. So then, what's enough gun for your average muley? An 88mm Flak cannon?
