7x57 Mauser

Found a nice load for my Brazilian Mauser last weekend, using 175 grn Sierra SBT and IMR 7828.
It shot under 3/4" , 8 rnd group at 100 yds, no recoil to speak of.
Rifle is a 1908 Brazilian, all parts matching, that I put an Instamount and a Vortex Crossfire Scout scope on.

What are your favorite loads for the mighty 275 Rigby?

hooligan1, I though someone would jump in, I do not have a big interest in shooting 8MM57 rifles unless I chamber it to 8MM06 or I change the barrel and chamber it to something more domestic. Before I take a Mauser apart for another creation I check it for accuracy.

I have started on two bench rest type rifles, I have two M1917 actions, both chambers are going to be based on the 338 Winchester but in 8MM meaning they will be called 8MM338.

Model 95 Mauser, my first deer rifle bought from Montgomery Wards in full military guise and sporterized by myself with a Herter's walnut sporter stock !

7X57 Mauser
154 grain Hornady RN bullet
40 grains IMR 4895
approx. 2580 fps.

Three shots would group into 1 1/2 inch with open iron sights , offhand , at 50 yards.
Just the ticket for hunting white tails in the thick Louisiana bottom lands...aka swamp !
I wanted a gunsmith to rebarrel it to 308 Winchester...he refused , told me the Mauser 95's were made to feed 7X57, the 308's sometimes gave feeding trouble and said the 7X57 was just as good if not better for hunting deer. Told me to load round nose Hornady bullets 154 to 175 grains, at moderate velocity , that would do the job ....he was right !

I have a couple I like but hesitate as they were worked up in a modern rifle.

Winchester suggested loads
#1. 150 gr. spitzer 46.6 gr. W760 43,500 c.u.p. Remington brass WLR primer.

#2. 175 gr. Round nose 44.0 gr. W760 2400 FPS 44,500 C.U.P. (very accurate in three 7x57 rifles.) Remington brass WLR primer.

I do have a load with the 140 gr. Nosler Ballistic tip and W760 that does 2800 FPS accurately and am working with Re17 with the 150 gr. Nosler Partition that does 2700 FPS. The 140 does well in two rifles but is too hot for the third. I've only done work with the 150 gr. in one rifle so far.

Take into account that factory ammo is under loaded due to weaker 1893/95 Mausers and the 7x57 case holds about 1.5 gr. more powder than the 7-08. That does make for a noticable safety margin. Still, your rifle is one of the older ones so be careful in working up top loads for the rifle.

I got my IMR 7828 load from a Lyman handbook, and by the way my looks its fine, hardly any recoil and its not max by their book, its just really consistant.
I havent tried it in my Chilean mauser yet, but its an older model 95, so Im going to drop a few kernels back and work up with it...Im hoping it likes this load too, it would make a nice timber/brush rifle...

hooligan1, I was looking at a picture taken in Alabama, a young hunter shot a dear with a bow, in another picture taken about 14 days later I saw the same pick up truck, the same young hunter with another dear taken with a 7mm57 rifle; I called his dad to find out what was going on, it was as thought they only had one rifle between the three of them. The 300 Winchester Mag was too much gun, the 270 Winchester was too heavy etc., It seems the Model 98 chambered to 7mm57 is the favorite, I have sent them hundreds of reloads when trying to determine what the rifle likes, their dad says the rifle likes everything. I asked them if they wanted a 30/06 all they had to do was send me a Timney trigger for a 98 Mauser, eventually they will send one but I may have to wait until they miss a shot.

F. Guffey, you may be waiting a while...
Im going to try some 150 grain ABLR 's in this 29.5 inch barrel, ( I have 100 ) and see if its a multi bullet lover.

you may be waiting a while...

More information than necessary but my wife wrecked my P/U, the estimate has exceeded the value according to my Insurance company. The bed has been destroyed and according to them I need a rear axle. What does all of this mean? My son found a bed that is the same color so it looks like I am going to head off for Alabama, the color is the same. The color for me would not be a problem but the wife insist we color coordinate.

Point? I will take the rifle but I will not have time to take it to the range.

I loaded 100 #1940's Christmas Eve morning, then realized I had no cartridge box for them, so some 3006 got moved over a bit and I managed to free up a 100 rnd box to land them in.....going to have some fun at the next range trip!!
