7mm Ultra Mag?

I was looking over its published velocities and it appears that the 7mm Ultra outruns the 7mm Weatherby. But on all of the other Ultras (300, 338, 375) the Weatherbys outrun them. Not sure about case capacities on either but I wonder what caused Ultra to win this one time.....

There are a lot of variables when comparing cartridges. Case capacity is only one. Pressure level is another. IIRC Weatherby rifles also have a certain amount of freebore [not certain that is correct term] the bullet has a bit of room before it meets full resistance from the barrel.

The closest comparison is the 7mm STW. i think the factory ammo spread is a difference on a couple of hundred fps out of the bbl. not enough to make me sell my Ruger #1 7mm STW and run out and buy an ultra.

Kobra, you can take this with a grain of salt, but what I have read in certain magizines the 300 ultra mag has more velocity and more knock down power when using factory loads than the 300 weatherby mag.It also holds up better at longer distances.Probably with good reloads it would be even faster. I guess it would be personel preference and beltless VS. Belted.

BIGR, I am aware the 300 Ultra outruns the 300 Weatherby. I was comparing it to the 30-378 Weatherby in that instance which is faster. Pick up a box of 30-378 sometime...that stuff looks serious.

XXSUPO, if I owned a 7mm STW I wouldn't think about getting rid of it just for a few more fps. I didn't realize #1's come in 7mm STW.

Remington sure likes the 7mm's for some reason.......

Kobra I will agree 100 % about the 30-378 being faster than the 300 ultra mag..That is one serious looking caliber. Since I have been looking to buy a more powerful .30 caliber I have been doing a little homework on some of those barn burners. I think the 30.-378 was one of the first factory .30 calibers to exceed the 3400 FPS mark with a 180 GR. .30 caliber bullet.I also have been reading about the Lazzaroni Warbird I think it is in 7.82. That is one barn buring .30 caliber that would probably give the 30.-378 a run for the money. I read on the Lazzaroni web site where sako now chambers this round. If I am not mistaken the 130 GR. bullet coming out of the 7.82 is traveling near 4000 FPS. WOW...... Might be buying new barrels often.. Those two may be more gun than I need. I might have to get the 300 ultra mag. and work up some good hunting loads for it. I am sure we have not seen the end to this new magnum caliber war. Just as Remington has come out with the new ultra mags, Winchester has come out with the 300 short magnum and you can bet the farm they will have more to come.

XXSUPO, I really love those SS/Laminate #1's. My local gun shop as one in 25-06 which I don't have any need for, so that was the only thing that has keep me from buying one.

BIGR, I agree the WSM's will definitely follow suit in other calibers. I will guess a 338, then a 7mm, then a 6.5mm. If they make one in 6mm and I will have to get it. I am really contemplating getting a 300 WSM in an A-Bolt SS Stalker when I start seeing ammo. I have been doing the same studying you have on the 30 Magnums especially the 30-378. I like Lazzaroni's offerings but they are so bad I bet they really eat up barrels, plus the rifles are astronomical in price. I have decided to price an Accumark in 30-378. I can order affordable brass and dies so I feel safer with it than Lazzaroni's. Plus my local dealer is a Weatherby dealer.

Kobra, I have thought about trying a Weatherby. I have owned Remingtons, Brownings, Rugers and Winchesters in centerfires, but no other makes. I just wonder if they are making the 300 ultra mag in the Weatherby. I might try to get away from the belted magnums. I've read where the beltless rounds might be just a little more accurate. I must make a decision before next hunting season, because I am ready to try a different caliber. Good luck.........

If price is a big problem, don't forget most any gunsmith can turn a run of the mill 7mag into an STW for around $100. Just make sure you have the 26" barrel (or longer).

kidcoltoutlaw,

Hodgdon's website has information on reloading for the 7mm RUM as well as just about every other caliber imagineable.

I am getting 3200 plus FPS out of a 24" barrel 7MM Rem Mag using 150 grain Ballistic Tip bullets. This not a max load in my rifle; however, it shoots about .5' at a hundred yards. I would bet I could get 3300 FPS with this bullet if I tried. I get over 3100 FPS with the same rifle using 160 Partitions. The fastest I have safely moved the 160 grain Partition is 3200 FPS using R-22 powder. This was right at maximum load for my rifle; however, the not quite maximum load using H-4831 shoots better out of my rifle...and it's moving out at over 3100 FPS. I have used both of these loads on Rocky Mountain mule deer, and they are too much.

My point: What is the benefit of one of these new fangled 7MM super shootin' magnums? Do they really shoot that much faster than a properly (and safely) loaded 7MM plain ol' vanilla Rem Mag? On head-to-head competition using the same lenght barrel, are the newer models really the way to go?

For mule deer, I'm going back to my .270 Winchester. I'll bring out my 7MM Rem Mag for elk and larger critters.

Good huntin'
E

The Ballistic Tips shoot .5" out of my rifle, not half a foot as my previous post indicates.

Sorry,
E

i looked at the data for the .338 ultra mag and i did not see anything better than what i had in my .338 win mag.it does look like a way to push a new gun
