7mm STW

STW stands for "Shooting Times Westerner". The load was developed by one of the writers for "Shooting Times" magazine or something like that.

Thanks. Any insight into why it was created/how its different from the 7mm Rem Mag or 7mm Weatherby Mag?

Actually, it was developed by Layne Simpson. It's the 8mm Remington necked down 1mm.

I just got back from CO last week where I helped a friend quarter, bone, and pack out a bull elk that was shot from a ranged distance of 893 yards with a 7mm STW. Both 140 gr. bullets exited the aniaml, the first entered the bull next to the spine on the top of the back and exited the brisket. The second hit the large bone in the leg which it shattered. I was thoroughly amazed at the accuracy and power remaining in the bullet at that distance.

My dad just took a mulie in Montana using 160 gr. Nolser Partitions. Decently sized deer, his was the only one taken with one shot. And the deer dropped pretty quickly as he told me. Still can't get the 140 grainers to work to his specs though.
