7mm Rem Mag in a Tikka T3 Lite???

I have considered purchasing this rifle for an upcoming Elk Hunt. Is this rifle too light for that caliber? Will the recoil be ridiculous? I have no intention of hunting anything larger than Elk. I would like to use it on Whitetail and Mule Deer, however I already own a .270. Is this the caliber I should be looking at?

Unless you just want an excuse to buy a new rifle, your .270 with the right bullet choice and weight is perfectly suitalbe for anything in NA except the big bears.

7mm mag in a Tikka rifle is going to kick a bit. As already stated, your 270 will take an elk just as handily as the 7 mag with the proper bullet. What kind of 270 do you have? If it is something that weighs 7.5 pounds or more (rifle alone) maybe you should get a Tikka in 270 and use it as a lightweight mountain rife.

I think you should go ahead and get it, although I think 300 win mag would be a better choice.

When you've got it post a video of you firing a few boxes of ammo through it.
I've always wanted to know what the kick would be like in those calibers.:)

If you need to, put a kick-ease or similar pad on and it won't be bad at all. A 7mm mag does not kick nearly as much as a .300 win mag. The .300 win mag in the T3 light would hurt you.

I think you'd be very happy with a T3 Lite. They are everything folks say they are.

But if you get the 7mm you'll probably want to put a Limbsaver or Kick-Eez on it and swap out the scope rings.

I put a set of Warnes on mine. Most folks go with Talley. Either are good.

I have killed elk with a .270, a 7 mm mag, and even a .307 Win before. They all died quick and tasted good. My dad has killed a bunch with a 30-30. And I have a buddy who gets one every year with a .243, although that wouldn't be my favorite choice. On the other hand, many years ago I saw a guy shoot one in the gut with a 375 H&H. It took us 3 hours to track him down and kill him.

My opinion is that there's not enough difference between a .270 and 7 MM Mag to argue about. If you hit the same spot with either bullet, you'll have the same results.

But I know sometimes a guy just wants a new rifle. There''s no reason for common sense to enter into that decision. I have a couple 7 mms and I enjoy them. Use a PAST recoil shield at the bench and the recoil isn't bad. When you're hunting, you won't even feel the recoil.

@PTS1...I currently own a Savage 111, synthetic stock/blue barrel. I think I'd like to take 2 rifles with me on this hunt just in case. I'd rather be safe. I'm just trying to decide which caliber. I would like to be able to use my next rifle for more than just elk hunts.
I have had numerous people tell me to use my .270 win, I've also had people tell me that I need a larger caliber as well. My lack of experience has me confused.

Since you want another rifle, I also suggest the T3 in one of the 300 mags. I've used mine for the last 5 years in 300 WSM, and recoil is not as bad as some are making it. I have a Hi-Viz Xcoil pad on mine, but the Limbsaver and Kick-Eez will work just as well. The felt recoil is less than the pounding from a 12 ga pump shotgun.

The T3 is an extremely accurate rifle and you'll appreciate its light weight walking up and down mountains.

Your savage is more than capable of taking elk. For full disclosure, I have never hunted an elk (hoping the state of Colorado will draw my name this year). However, if and when I finally get drawn, I will be taking my 270wsm. I will be using a 150 grain accubond bullet and have no doubt what so ever that as long as I place it in the boiler room, he will either go down where he stands or shortly after. I actually have a 300 win mag that I will take as a back up rifle, however, I feel more confident with my 270, so that is what I will use. If you want a new rife, go for it! Always good to have extra rifles, just don't worry so much about the caliber. You already have a fine elk/deer rifle in you 270. If you do want a larger calliber, I would go with a 30-06 or higher. The ballistics of the 7mm mag are just not that much better than a 270. Remeber 7mm= .284 inch. 270= .277 inch. Diference: .284-.277=.007 inch.
