7mm-08 and .308

No, you cannot shoot a .308 in a 7mm-08 rifle.

7mm is .284 diameter. The .308 is --- .308 diameter. 7mm-08 is a .308 case necked DOWN to .284 diameter.

A .38 caliber bullet is actually .357 diameter - same as a .357 magnum. That's why you can shoot a .38 cartridge in a .357 magnum revolver. The difference between the .38 and the .357 is in case length and not bullet diameter. The .357 is longer than a .38 which is why you cannot shoot a .357 in a .38 revolver but can shoot the .38 in a .357 magnum.

I can see the confusion

Both are based off the same case and will look quite similar. You might be able to chamber a 7mm into a .308(with potentially disasterous results), but I don't think you could go the opposite.

Actually the case length on a 7mm-08 is .010 longer than a .308 (if i remember correctly). I tried chamber my handloaded -08 in my buddies .308 and when the cases are trimmed to proper length they wouldn't chamber easily. Im sure you could ram the bolt shut but who would do that.

Case length have about .020" difference; the 28 caliber one being longer to prevent its use in the 30 caliber one.
