788 stocks

Wow..This is my first post. longtime lurker. Now..to the point. Does anyone produce aftermarket stocks for the Remington 788? Glad to be aboard.:)

I think the only company out there that makes one is Ramline, but I haven't seen them lately. Might want to try Brownells or Gun Parts. I have a 788 in .308 that needs some synthetic, but never got around to picking one up.

Hi Dave! Remember me? No? Oh well, welcome to TFL anyway. ;)

I put a Ramline black synthetic on my 788 (22-250) because it was the only one available and the old wood stock was beyond repair after 32 years of use. I can't say the Ramline is a high quality stock, but it is serviceable and fit well. They have unsightly mold lines and such. $78 is a good price and less than I paid, but for what you get that is still about double what it should be. Maybe the Woodtech model would be better for you but it looks like it isn't available in .308.

As for the rifle itself, it will be one of the very last to go if I ever need to sell any guns. They don't make 'em like they used to, and the 788 was supposed to be a "bargain" rifle.

The rifle in question is in .243 calibre and has been the undoing of many whitetails here in beutiful South Carolina. I think I'd prefer the plain jane hardwood over inferior quality synthetic. What would really be nice is a straight grain nothing-fancy walnut, but it has plenty of character the way it is. and character counts....right?

Can anyone with a Ramline on a 788/308 tell me if the stock is flush (or even close) with the magazine? Mine is a shooter, but the factory stock just doesn't tuck under the arm well.

Riverrider, your stock is almost the same color as mine. As Forgetful Dave stated, most of ones I have seen are blondish, and way beat up.

I still kick myself--a week after i bought the one in the pic, i stumbled across another 788 in .308, 22" for $185 with a weaver scope and rings. Thought it would be there when i had the cash for it a week later, but it was gone.

Ah, the old stand on the chair to get the proper photo technique!

Done that many times myself, heehee!

Gorgeous Model 788, regardless. I keep looking for one of them in .30-30, to replace the Savage Model 340 I lost in my divorce.:(

Does anybody know what an unloaded 788 weighs without optics. I've always felt they combine a natural pointability with a heft that is reasuring somehow.

Dave,

I called remington, and they sent me a manual for my 788. It was a photocopy actually, but pretty useful. You might want to give them a call and see what they tell you.

Anyone use the iron sights on these? Mine came with irons, but i removed them and used a Leupold 3x9 for a while. I now want to switch back to irons, but my rear sight is broken (split in half). I am told that Ashley Outdoors has some that might work.

also, i got the 1 piece base from CDNN Investments for $2. It is a Tasco aluminum, but it was all i could find in a 1 piece design.

My brothers has a one-piece redfield base (turn-in style) don't know if they still make them. It fits really well as there is no gap between the base and the left side of the receiver. It might be worth looking in to. Thanks for the heads-up on the manual.

Thanks fellas!

The stock on this rifle came from Gun Parts Corp., and when I ordered it I expected a used riflestock, but it was brand spanking new, except for a very minor ding in the butt area. Wanting to make it perfect, I used the old wet-rag-and-a-hot-iron trick...unfortunately, being the klutz that I am, I accidentally touched the bare finish with the hot iron. GRRRRR!! So, I refinished the whole thing myself. I guess even a klutz can do something right now and then, because I am very pleased at how it came out!

By the way, any of you guys who want a nice stock for your 788, check out http://www.gunpartscorp.com/ and you should be able to find what you're looking for...and they do come in a simulated walnut finish. I especially was glad to get one without the gawdawful Monte Carlo hump!:barf:

Here's some pix of my Model 788 in 22-250. This will give you an idea what the Ramline black synth looks like:
