77/22 Light Firing Pin Strike (.22)

I got a good deal on a rifle sans bolt but had a spare bolt at home so all good. Took it out to put a couple through it but found it was only putting a slight dent in the rim of the case.
Half cycle the bolt a couple of times and it would eventually fire but then not fire the next round.
Interestingly, if I put a spent case into the breech and fired, it would come out with a good looking indentation on it.
Have stripped and cleaned the (brand new) bolt and also taken apart and cleaned up the fire control bits.
Does anyone have any ideas on the cause or possible solution to this problem?
I did notice a gap of 0.014 between the bolt and back of the barrel which closes up after trigger is pulled, is this normal?
I'm hoping some knowledgeable member may have seen this before?? Cheers!

Since you said it is not the original bolt, it sounds like excessive headspace. The barrel may need to be set back. Not a huge deal, just take the barrel out and turn the shoulder back a few thousandths. Definitely a job for a machinist or gunsmith. If you know a good smith, let him fix it.
