Bought 250 .224 hornady 75 grain BTHP's for my 20" AR.

Anyone got a favorite powder for that weight? I have some ideas but I haven't loaded pills that heavy in .223 before. I like hodgdon extreme powders and was thinking Varget. But maybe you guys have a pet load for 77 grain smk's you like. Looking for the lowest velocity SD mainly and I will weigh each charge.

While Varget and CFE223 work great, I've found that with the heavier bullets Ramshot TAC seems to work best for me (YMMV).

I really like 2000-MR with the Hornady 75gr match bullets. This is my F-Class load. I use CCI BR4 primers and LC brass.

I experimented quite a bit with finding a powder for those bullets.I stock Varget ,I like Varget. It works great with 69 gr bullets.I REALLY wanted Varget to be THE powder.I tried.
Its good, but RE-15 is significantly more velocity and accuracy is fine.

If you get the Hornady reloading book,it has pages specific to loading for AR's..
Its their bullet. They already did the work.Start there.

I use PowerPro 2000-MR for my 75 and 80gr service rifle loads. But literally any powder in that same burn rate range will give you good results. Re15, Varget, IMR4064, H4895, CFE223, ARComp, have all posted good accuracy loads.

Ok thanks....i guess I'll try CFE first since I use it already on one of my .308 loads and my 62 grain.223 load. But if it doesn't work, RL 15 will be next.

Change of plans.... due to recent discoveries related to CFE's temp sensitivity in my guns when barrels are warm, im going to try Varget (an extreme powder meaning temperature insensitive)

I use CFE223 and have not found any temp sensitive problems. I shoot in temps from the 30's to 90's. I load 27.3 CFE223 with 55 gr bullets.

Varget will shoot fine.
I live in wide-open space longer range land.A little extra velocity was appealing to me.I was looking for 2700 fps.I could get it with RE-15.Not so with Varget.

Benchmark is same powder tech as Varget but the next step faster.Brother has excellent results /accuracy with Benchmark and the 60? gr Varmint Ballistic tip.
I do not think it would be a great choice for 75 gr bullets.
While RE-15 was the best I could find for 75 gr Hornadys,With 69 gr match bullets my go-to powder is Varget

I just started to experiment with Hornady 75s and CFE223. I am loading them for my 5.56 chambered AR15 with a 1-8 twist 16" non chromed barrel. (Ruger AR556). I just came back from the range where I worked from 25.5 to 27.0 grns of CFE223, lit by CCI 450 primers and the bullet seated to 2.260.

I got my best groups with 26.8 and 27.0 grns with the primers starting to flatten and some swipe marks on the case heads. The flattening was a little less then factory loaded M193 and M855.

I didn't get the chrono it as it was too dark.

Outstanding,
I'm working a load up myself but using Varget. I have a Ruger SR 556 Varmint 1:8 twist 20" stainless bull barrel.

I'm a bit turned off of CFE due to temp sensitivity. In other loads including.308 and .223 I have found my warm barrel groups open up a bit and the point of impact moving up by an inch in some instances.

I think CFE is great if you are keeping the barrel cool/cold , because I have found solid accuracy and excellent velocity. And I use it in my AK. Maybe you will not find it as tem sensitive as I did.

good bullet

Mississippi:
I just started experimenting with the same bullet for mild paper-punching loads in my 16" 1:7 twist M4. So far, my best groups have been with 21.5 grs of IMR 4064, although everything from 20.0 - 22.5 grs worked pretty well when seated to 2.260" COAL. Using 21.0-22.0 grs of CFE-223 was so-so and using 21.0-22.0 grs of Win 748 was not very good. Perhaps I am also a victim of unintended temperature sensitivity with the latter two ball powders since I usually fire 5 round groups in less than 1 minute.
I am fairly new to reloading rifle bullets, but after buying and weighing 500 of the Hornady 55 gr FMJ-BT and 62 gr FMJ-BT, about half were over and half were under the stated weight typically -0.3 to +0.4 grs from the stated weight). However, out of 200 Hornady 75 gr BTHP-match bullets, only 1 was under 75 grs (74.9 grs), 3 were 75.1 and 1 was 75.2 grs. The quality control of these match bullets were excellent in my opinion.

on sale

BTW, last week either MidwayUSA or Brownells (I can't remember which) advertised a 4000 rd bulk pack on sale. I can't remember the price, but it was much cheaper than $20.99 per 100 which is what I paid.
