700 VS OR 700 LTR IN .308 ???

Hello all,
Need some opinions. I am trying to decide between the Remington 700 vs with 26" barrell or the 700 LTR with 20" barrel. I like the feel of the LTR the most but need to know what the trade-off would be in terms of acurracy, velocity, and range with the shorter barrel. Either will be topped with a Leupold tactical. Thanks, jkc

What do you want to do?

From my range shooting, I have a PSS in .308, a friend has an LTR in .308, the LTR will be at least as accurate, and probably more so at moderate ranges. It will give up velocity and hence long range capability over 600 yards. For shorter ranges, is will be more than adequate and much better to carry.

As most police tactical situations are sub-100 yards, it was designed to be used where the long range and heavy weight were not needed. I have an LTR in .223 and will use it for a carrying/walking gun for varmints under 400 yards. It is definitely a sub-MOA gun. If I need longer ranges, the PSS will do nicely.

With the lower velocity of the LTR due to the shorter barrel, a bullet drop scope with specific cams like the Leupold M3 may not be exactly on.

Another thing to consider. Value and scarcity. I would get the LTR. They are getting harder to find and one day you may not be able to get a LTR or a PSS, and the 700 VS will always be available.

Good point Bullseye. Thanks for the reply.

PSS SHARPSHOOTER - You mentioned that the 20" barrel would not be a good choice past 600 yards. I doubt I could hit anything that far anyway but I am curious, Don't the guys shooting 1000 yard matches use M1A's with 22" barrels? Does the extra 2" make that much difference? Thanks for the reply. Your points are good ones I just think I am missing something on that one. jkc

You would be suprsised what you can do at 1000!

I shot my REm 700 VS in .308 at a 1000 yard match and shot a 385-10x out of 400 using a Leupold 6.5-20x50 LRT and with a harris model L for a rest. It was a heck a lot of fun and I used Hornady 178 gr. A-max reloads. The only bad thing is that my scope ran out of elevation and I had to hold on a specific spot on the number board above the target and adjust from there. I am not a great shooter by no means and that was my first 1000 yard shoot.

So the LTR would be nice for carrying around (I took my VS on a deer hunt and it is a bear!), but the VS or PSS would be a little more versitile for the different types of shooting and for SHTF possibilities.

Get the LTR

It'll meet most your needs without the additional heft of 6" more barrel. But if you don't get the LTR, it'll save one for me. That's my next gun for 2001.

JKC:

Not that the 20" is not good, just that at 1000 yards, longer has advantages for velocity.

El Rojo: There are a number of scope bases that have a forward cant to accommodate scopes with elevation limitations at long ranges. I am using Badger Ordnance with a 20 MOA forward cant, but they are $$$ ($125 for rings, $135 for the base. Leupold now makes their STD base in a LR (long range)format with I believe 15-20 MOA forward cant. It is the same price as the normal STD base at around $25.00.

JKC, I own a 700 VS in 308 and love it. It is very acurate and a dream to shoot. I looked at the PSS and the LTR in 308 and from what I heard from other shooters is that the lost of velocity was minimal between the two guns. The only reason I went with the VS is that I'm left handed. To my knowledge they do not make a left handed version of the LTR or the PSS. If they did they are darn hard to find. If I had to make the decision between the two guns I probably would have gone with the LTR first and then bought the PSS or VS later.

Anyway you go you will have a gun that will last you for many years down the road.

JKC. Go with the LTR, mines in a McM A-4 stock, 4.5x14 v-111
with mil-dots, H-S mag/trigger guard, Gemtech brake,AWS fast
action handle and Harris bi-pod. Total weight 12lb 13oz.
Factory 175 Fed match avg 2630 fps. .5 moa factory does better with hand loads. Good Luck, you can't go wrong with any of them.
