700 LTR 20" barrel limitations?

How much velocity do you loose if you go with the 20" barrel as oppossed to the 26" PSS barrel? I am curious if it makes much of a difference for long range shooting and hunting purposes?

Thanks.

Someone recently told me that the six inches of barrel means about a 60fps difference in velocity. For long-range (over 500 yards), it makes a difference, but not for hunting.

Dave30-06, figure on approx 15 fps per inch.

It will shoot just as well at long range, up to the point of keeping the velocity thee same.
So if you handload, add powder, and vel....

About every ten years or so, somebody at the Rifleman or one of the gunzines gets curious about this question.

Remember that most factory muzzle velocities are chronographed from a 26" barrel. The reloading data handbooks vary; 24" has become more common for some, than the old standard of 26".

Anyhow, most tests have shown a velocity loss of 50 ft/sec per inch to 70 ft/sec per inch.

You can figure 300 to 400 ft/sec less with a 20" barrel than with a 26" barrel.

I would agree with Art on this as my chrono data puts my 20' VS in 223 about 200-300fps slower than the test loads out of a 26" barrel.

This same question has been hashed and re-hashed within the small group of long range
shooters that I run with.
A number of the guys are expecting .308's from a custom smith
all with 24" tubes for the increased velocity
needed to reach 600-800 yards.
To the point my 700 LTR will push a 175gr.

fps (5) shot average, 75%. To answer your question I don't see the need for the extra
length or weight.
