of the round? Or is there an american or other version of the calibre that can be used in a Russian rifle of this calibre?

7.62x54R? You got to be kidding, my friend.
Just get an issue of Shotgun News or visit some decent gunshow - this ammo is everywhere.. Average price - $12-14 per 100.
You can get it by mail order very cheap.

I use Sellier & Bellot but there are several others out there.. The S&B is the better quality. I have had some problems with the old surplus stuff (duds)

Beware of the Yellow Tip ammo, it is very hot...

so picking up a Nagant carbine in 7.62X54 for under $100 ainr gonna be a 'wallhanger' type deal? They make anything in semi-auto? Hey...almost all of my firearms are Russian...do I see a trend? ;)

SVT 40, I believe, is 7.62 x 54R, and that should fill your semi-auto bill.

Stay away from Czech ammo, as the lacquer makes them "stick." Russian and Yugo have favorable reviews.
