My 1st post here on TFL.

Am desiring input AND recommendations from the posters here on semi-auto AR type rifle. I am just trying to learn here as my knowledge base is small and leaning on opinions and experiences of many will advance my learning curve at a greater rate. Just tell my what you like/dislike about certain rifles , why, quality issues or praises.

So far I am really jonesing for LaRue OBR 7.62. That's about all I can afford to do though is to jones for it.

So a little more reasonably priced offerings I'm looking at are DPMS, Armalite, and RRA. I want to stay with the AR type rifle though.

I want a 16"-18" barrel. Uses will be whitetail and hog hunting and doubling as a defensive weapon. Expected ranges would be under 300 yds..

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

"...want a 16"-18" barrel..." Hi. A 16"-18" barrel loses a lot of velocity and has significant muzzle blast and noise.
Decide how much money you want to spend for the rifle, a scope and mounts, taxes and shipping first.
Extra mags can be expensive. Five 20 round AR-10 mags run $150. Or $44.95 each. $44.95 each for DPMS mags. RRA mags run $30 each. They're FAL metric or L1A1(Brit FAL) inch mags. How they can use both I don't know.

If I was gonna get a 7.62 AR it would be between the LaRue, the LMT MWS, a KAC SR-25, or a Noveske N6

Thanks for the replies. I'd get the RRA for its value and RRA reputation but the lack of compatibility of parts makes me a bit shy ... still chewing on this.

Get an FAL from DSA. Accurate enough for under 300 yard hunting needs, proven design for personal defense needs. Not an AR design but so what.
