7.62x25 self defense ammo

The only ones I have seen are listed here.

These are loadings developed especially for the CZ-52, but I haven't tried any of them yet.

The other option is the Magsafe 7.62Tokarev Defender load. According to the specs, it puts out a 52grn composite frangible bullet at 2,120fps. I've heard them to be reliable in CZ-52's, but they cost $15+ per pack of 8 rounds. Thats an expensive propostition if you intend to test them seriously in quantity.

Search the archives, there was some talk of someone taking StarLine Tokarev brass and reloading with some sort of .30 cal soft/hollow point projectile.

I bought 3 boxes of 7.62X25 hollowpoints at a gun show a couple of years back. I believe the fellow selling them had a gunshop up in Bryan or College Station. The ammo was awesome, and wouldn't you know it, I haven't seen the guy since.

The load consisted of 85 grain XTP's in new Starline brass. I tested some of it for expansion in wet sandy clay soil and soggy newspapers. I didn't have a micrometer with me at the time but it looked like they expanded to between 3/8 and 1/2 inch diameter, using the ruler scale on a Leatherman tool. The slugs held together extemely well. I estimated the penetration in wood to be well over 3 inches from a couple of shots at some 2 X 8's I had; this is about what I've experienced firing .38 Spl RNL at the same type of media, and better than .380 FMJ. I tested in a Tokarev, the guy said it would be no problem to shoot the loads in it. I had no malfunctions with the 56 rounds I fired from 4 different magazines.

I still have about 15 rounds left, which I load up when I feel like carrying the Tok or my CZ.

I have never shot Magsafes through either the Tok or the CZ, but they feed by hand-cycling in the Tok just fine. I never tried the CZ.

Tried Magsafe in my CZ52. Wouldn't chamber.
Had the same problem with ammo loaded by Quality Cartridge. Bought two boxes and not one round would chamber. Old Czech milsurp, S&B, Norinco, WWII DWM, and even some of my own frankenrounds made from Hornady softpoints chambered fine, so it's not the gun. Apparently, reliable defense loads are going to be hard to find. FWIW, it seems the chambers on the Toks are roomier than the CZs.

For the handloader, there are options.

"Accurate Arms #2" reloading book has some CZ52 only very hot loads for the 7.62x25mm. Some are over 1900 fps.

I have experimented way past those loads, and found the CZ52 pistol to be inferior to the Tokarev pistol for strength.

The Sierra 30 cal 110 gr. round nose [not FMJ] bullet is an option for defense.
