I came across some 7.62 x 39 ammo that I am trying to identify. The only markings are "311" & "93". It is brass cased. Can anyone identify this?

The only brass case 7.62x39 ammo I know of is American Eagle, Remington, Winchester, S&B, Privi, or Yugo surplus. Could very well be Yugo surplus. If so then it is corrossive ammo.

Lapua and Fiocchi make some as well.

What sort of numbering would you expect from China?

Yes.

China uses three numbering systems, one that is unique to China and is more or less dying out, one that is shared with other Asian nations like Korea and Japan (sinospheric numbers represented by characters), and Arabic numbers.

The Chinese have been using arabic numbering on their ammunition for at least 30 years and possibly even longer.

Asian nations have been quick to adopt Arabic numbering when it suits their purposes. Take, for example, Japan. As long as 100 years ago they were using arabic numbers to serialize their Arisaka rifles, but in the model designation they used sinospheric numeral characters.

"polish?"

In fact, yes, the Chinese use Polish numbers. They also use English numbers, American numbers, French numbers, German numbers, Canadian numbers, and Peruvian numbers on their ammo.

You'd think it would be confusing, but amazingly, it's not. :D

I actually looked that up around 4 am. It's true.

It should be obvious at this time that I don't have any interest in military arms and ammunition from the communist bloc/third world.

I'm still very surprised that china, of all places, has produced military ammunition in brass cases.

It very well could be copper washed steet, It is kind of tarnished and I just assumed it was brass. I have some remington cartridges that are in brass.
I also just picked up some of these:
150rds - 7.62x39 Yugoslavian Military 123gr. FMJ Ammo
[YUGO76239] $32.95
This is Yugoslavian Military 7.62x39 123gr. FMJ Ammo. This ammo was manufactured by a Yugoslavian military arsenal. This ammo has a 123gr. NON-MAGNETIC FMJ bullet. That means a magnet will not stick to the bullet, so this ammo should be safe to shoot at any gun range. It is also brass cased, berdan primed and mildly corrosive. This is excellent military grade 7.62x39 ammo. This ammo is packed in 15rds. per box.
As you can see they are brass cased.
Thanks for your help in the indentification of my new found stock.
