Hi all I have a rem model 600 in 6mm, it was my fathers and I love it. However my daughter also like to hunt with it so I thought about getting another but that seem to be easyer said the done. So I got a Savage 308 and really like it but still want another 6mm. Could I buy a Savage in 243 and have it reamed out to 6mm and have it shoot ok with the 1-9.25 twist instead of the rems 1-10 twist.
thanks for the imput

The early 6mm was called a 244 Remington and is the identical same case/cartridge as the 6mm Remington. The 244's had a twist rate of 1"12". When the 6mm came out, the twist rate was 1:9" which is faster than the 243. The 6mm is suppose to stabilize heavier bullets better than the 243. I have several 6mms and they seem to like the lighter weight bullets for accuracy. Most shoot the 75 gr bullets to a ragged hole but the 90gr Speer groups pretty tight at 1/2" at 100 yds out of all of them. So if you are asking if the twist rate is acceptable- yes. Can the barrel be rechambered-yes.

Actually not. A 6mm Remington reamer will not "clean up" a .243 Winchester chamber. You would have to have the barrel set back and rethreaded.

You might come out cheaper to just buy a new barrel. Several barrel companies make screw in barrels for the Savage, the ugly barrel nut takes the worry out of installation and setting headspace.

I've already checked out barrels and they run about 2 to 3 hundred or more. A gun guy at my local shop said they have a guy they trust and it might cost around 100 dollars. I was not sure about the twist rate. I rechecked my books and the 6mm is a 1 in 9, my opps:eek: Other than that I was concerned about the bolt head. the 6 being slightly bigger then the 243

"The guy they trust" better know his stuff.

Repeat, he will have to take the barrel off, shorten it from the breech end, extend the shank and threads, THEN rechamber. A lot of work for $100 these days.

Otherwise you would run into the fact that the 6mm Rem case and chamber are longer but more tapered than the .243 Winchester and the .243 is already larger than the 6mm anywhere in front of the head. If you run a 6mm reamer straight into a .243 chamber, it will leave a step at the location of the .243's shoulder.

Good luck.

6mm v. .243

I owned a Browning B78 in 6mm once. It was the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. Also, it was a stunning beauty with its French Walnut stock and tapered octagon barrel.
Nevertheless, consulting many handloading manuals, the advantage of a two hundred fps load over a .243 is not likely significant.
Also, there was noticeable more recoil from the 6mm than the .243s I have shot despite the fact the the B78 was heaver than most little .243s.
Therefore, IMO, the performance of the .243 is so close to the 6mm Remington that it does not make a whole lot of sense to spend a lot of bucks in the pursuit of a "real" 6mm when .243s are common.
Less of course, you just gots to have one.

Yea the 243 is real common that's why I like the 6mm. Not many people have them and I find those that do or did won't part with them or wish they had them back. Besides I want it so why not:D
The gun shop I spoke of has been around for longer than I can remember and have never done me wrong so if they tell me something I tend to believe them. Oh and they did say that the barrel might have to be cut back and rethreaded sides $100 or even $200 is still better then $300 or more for just the barrel. I can buy a new savage for $399 at Dicks. So for say $150 more I can have what I want> I can always buy a 243 latter:D or maybe a 7mm08
