686 or GP 100 4"?

Ruger GP100

I love my Ruger, but a friend has the S&W. Both are pretty nice guns. I like my Ruger, it just seems to fit my hand better. I have had no problems with it.

Triggers aside, the GP-100 has a shorter ejector rod stroke and empty cases have a tendency to hang up on the rubber grips. However, I find the GP-100 to be more comfortable to shoot with stout loads than my 686 and is probably the more robust of the two.

Dirty Harry didn't use a Ruger.

Smiths have more bragging rights, sweeter triggers, much better/much smoother finishing, forged steel except for some of the smaller parts, and are PLENTY strong enough.

So...toss a coin, because the Ruger is OK too.

Still, I like to "fondle" my S&W 686, and I don't think a Ruger would inspire that feeling. A Ruger is the Glock of revolvers.

686 or GP-100

I would go GP-100.
Find a leather holster that will fit each [686 and GP-100.] After you do, switch guns in the holsters. The 686 will be too big for the GP-100 holster. The GP-100 will be too small for the 686 holster. That tells me the Ruger is a stronger gun. The trigger may need a spring kit....?

Madison - That's got to be the lamest, most ridiculous bit of evidence I have ever heard. I think all your holster experiment proves is that the holster was made to fit a specific gun. Were you on the OJ jury when he was trying on gloves?

The GP 100 is investment cast therfore it has to be bigger than a forged gun. I have them both. Like the smith the best due to it's trigger. If my GP 100 had an overtravel screw and better springs I would like it better.

man, i dont know what ya'll are talking about honestly. I've never shot a 686 but my gp100's trigger is incredible. it's so crisp and is probably only like 4# max in SA. but then again that might be the difference. I'm not a fan of shootin her DA, it takes about .5 sec to cock the gun, so thats what i always do anyways...

shoot, i take my gp out just about every other day, look her over, and give her a nice shine. dirty hairy might have used a S&W, but did he use the 686? that'd be about like saying i love my ford taurus b/c i saw someone driving a seleen mustang one time...

that said i'm sure both are great guns, but don't let anyone tell you the ruger is uglier, not as well built, or doesn't inspire pride like a S&W would. its a hell of a gun and you wont be sorry with either one. I just like the look of my GP better.

ive got 3 words that point you to the ruger hands down "Internal safety lock"
would you rather have a traditional setup or a democrats revolver

Minator,

Don't blame any one party or any one side (liberal vs conservative). Its a sham to keep you looking left when you should be right (or vice versa). Go with what you believe in, not just what you oppose. There are plenty of people in both parties that want to abolish your rights, regardless of whether they are 1st Amd., 2nd, or other. Watch both sides.

THIS IS VERY TRUE! While we do all blame Dems for reduced gun rights (especially here in CA where I live) Do not neglect to see what government does as a whole to take away any and all rights that they can. I myself am a libertarian and am happy to be so. I will post a link for anyone interested. As a libertarian I beleive in WAY smaller government, less invasive foreign affairs (as the world hates us for all our "help" anyway), and above all else the right to do whatever I want as long as it does not directly infringe upon another persons right to do the same or their saftey. For those of you that have never heard of libertarians I look forward to your thoughts on the site.

And o yeah I go Ruger Gp100 4 inch barrel Stainless :)

If you want to be proficient with DA a lot of revolvers have an over travel screw to prevent Movement of the trigger after the sear releases. Mt DW is adjustable my 586 has no over travel. Over travel will cause the firearm to move after the sear releases altering the impact. Like I said if my GP100 had one it would be perfect. There are gunsmiths who do that work.

That's like asking if you should get a Camry or an Accord. Both are fine choices that vary in some minor ways. It might come down to color or price, for example.

Size: Ruger seems somewhat bigger, overall but they are close

Ergonomics-I actually prefer the Ruger

Action: Smith and wesson

I choose the Ruger because I run insanely hot sillouette handloads through it and it is comfo0rtable to shoot and reliable.

I like the aesthetics of the Smith better

What about accessories? Do you have a particular holster in mind? See which one fits better.

Well, I would just forget the whole .357 thing and move into the Smith XVR, but that is just my latest fantasy. :)

Either way, you can't lose.

I had a 686 plus (7 shot) that went out of timing, and a model 60 that is slipping a tad.

I have had a Ruger GP100 for years with no timing problems and a SP101 with no timing problems.

Not trying to flame just one person's experience.

But, the S&W triggers are lighter.

I just bought a 686 with a 6 inch barrel 3 days ago, so you can imagine what my choice would be. I once had a 7 shot, 4 inch 686 a few years ago, and trading it was the stupidest thing I ever did. I have never owned a GP-100, but I once owned a Ruger SP-101 which basically is just a scaled down GP. Great guns, but that trigger is a pain. And they're tough too. But when you're talking about toughness, the 686 and GP-100 should both be tough enough for whatever you're going to put them through. Yes, the GP is a little more rugged, but unless you're planning on driving a truck over your guns it really shouldn't matter.

You can't go wrong with either, but I'd say the 686.
