686 front sight pin---hollow?

My wife was checking over her new SW 686 the other nite and said "wow you can see light thru here (the hole where the front sight pin goes). I took it to the local smith. He took it in the back room for a while, came back out and said "there's a pin there, it's just hollow". What the.....? Comments?
