686 - 4 way adjustable front sight

About 10 years ago purchased a new S&W 686 with an 8 3/8" bbl and a 4 position adjustable front sight.

I used the gun for nothing more than informal paper punching using 148 gr. wadcutters and found it to be the most accurate gun I ever owned.

Can't help but think this particular front sight had to be designed for more serious use than mine and wondered if anyone knows what it's original target audience was?

It's a serious front sight, machined right into the top of the barrel and not replaceable with any other type sight.

Also wondered how long S&W offered it as I have never seen it on any other 686's.

What you have is a silhouette front sight. They were easily adjusted to the four different distances of the targets in metallic silhouette competition.

Not sure how many were actually made, but are listed as being in production from '86 to '91.

S&W also offered this sight set-up on some Model 29's and 629's with barrels from about 6" to 10 5/8".
 
i have a 29 with that front sight.

i believe it is called the silhouette sight

used to knock down the mettalic targets

at different ranges.

What you said makes sense. I was never into that type of shooting, so I really didn't put it together.

It definintely does make for an accurate front sight at different ranges. Didn't know they made it for 29's and 629's, but I wouldn't think you would want if for a hunting sight.

I had a 586 with that same front sight setup but it's been gone for many years in trade for I don't even remember what. :)

But that front sight set up was for shooting steel plates...
