Is there a difference other than the length of the lug?

Want to get my first revo. Also looking at the GP-100.

No specific use... just want a revolver.

Go to the gunshop and lift and feel both. Get the one that feels better to you. Both are great guns. You are likely to get a bunch of babble from folks who have read one thing or another about these guns. I own multiple versions of each, and it comes down to personal preference. You have to have it in your hand to decide.

Clemson

66 or 686

Clemson is 100% correct. It is what feels right in your hand. The 66 is a K Frame with adjustable sights. The 686 is an L Frame with adjustable sights.
It is said in some circles that the L Frames handle the 125 Grain .357's better than the 66's. Supposed to have caused forcing cone erosion in the earlier 66's when used extensively. Debate continues on this issue. You will most likely never shoot enough .357's to have it become an issue. The GP 100 is said to be a sturdy, accurate piece in either 3" or 4" barrel. If you could shoot all 3, it would be even better. However, check 'em out where you can. ;)

I personally like the 686 more as im a sucker for the full lug barrel...i like the more forward weight feeling and it does seem to help out a bit with muzzle flip.

As mentioned, the 66 is a K frame , the 686 is the L. The L will not only be more robust for extensive 357 shooting but will absorb more felt recoil due to it's slightly increased weight and forward ballance. The 686 is my favorite where rapid fire /double tapping is involved. It just eats recoil and recovers faster ( even with those light .38 loads!) I've found price on the used market to be about equal. ( $250-$400) Of course, the ballance and "feel" are a matter of personal taste.

Greeting's All-

I concur with others who have said, "get the one that feels right to you".
I've owned 2x 686's, a 4" model and a 6 incher. The 6" model 686-5 is
still in my collection; while the 4" model is long gone. I've NEVER owned
any of the Ruger GP-100 series handguns; but I did own 2x 4" Ruger
Security-Six models, one blue and one stainless. They were some of
the best revolver's I've ever owned. Too bad I didn't have gumption
enough too keep 'em. I sell a lot of Ruger GP-100's, in all variations;
and have absolutely NO doubt about their quality or performance.

Best Wishes,
