66 or 1911?

Gunners,

I have a permanent 32 foot trailer on private property 300 yards from hard road and pretty secluded.

When I spend the night, I am armed. But I have a question to ask:

I'd like to know between a S&W Mod. 66 4"bbl and speedloader and a 1911A1, which would you take for a nightstand gun?

Both are fine guns... I'd go with a 1911, as I always do, but it's really which ever one fits you the best. If you've not extensively shot both, I suggest you do so.

Cheers,
C

Well, without knowing what general threats you are concerned about I think the .357 would probably provide a little more oomph.

My night gun"headboard" is a 357, keep it loaded forever and never worry about a jamming magazine.

I carry 1911s in cool weather but I have a Model 65 (fixed sight version of the 66) as my bedside gun. It's simple to use when awakened at 3:00 a.m. and is more tolerant to indifferent maintenance. I use .38 spl + P in the revolver as these are sufficient for defense and but have less muzzle flash and noise than .357 rounds.

I'd take the gun that I'm most comfortable with, is the most reliable and finally the one I shoot the best.

Both are fine choices so it really comes down to your preference.

For me I choose to keep the revolver ready for unexpected overnight intruders. I feel that I will be more likely to be able to fire the S&W without a hiccup while I'm still mostly asleep. But I do love my 1911 and prefer it over others for most other shooting events.

When I come out of a deep sleep I want a DA revolver. Some years ago I was startled awake on night when apparently a bird flew into the glass of the bedroom window. I grabbed my cocked and locked 1911A1 from the shoulder holster hanging on the bed post, dropped the safety and accidently tapped one off into the ceiling. I must say it woke me up rather quickly.

I am with the others, I like to SHOOT or carry a 1911 but with one hand for a gun, one hand for a flashlight, and the gripping hand for my eyeglasses when awakened, I want a DA trigger in case I bypass finger security. I keep either a revolver or a DA auto handy at night.

Between the two, the S&W 66 would be my choice for a nightstand gun. Simpler to manipulate and the heavy DA trigger would be preferential.

For me, a DA revolver is the perfect balance between ease of use and safety should I be rudely jerked from the land of nod in the wee hours of the morning, so my choice would be the M66.

Unless the 66 is loaded with some nice 158 +p .38spl, I'll vote the 1911. Simply because of decibels. cracking off a .357 inside is frankly quite unpleasant.

There are multiple threads here that have discussed the phenomenon that is called 'auditory exclusion'...

I can't make your decisions for you. If it were me, right now as I am today, I'd carry the Model 66 only because I don't own any 1911s and am quite familiar with K-frame S&W revolvers.

Either one should work, assuming you are comfortable with shooting the guns and they are in good reliable working condition.

All other things being equal, 9 rounds of .45 are better than 6 rounds of .38 / .357. Just depends on what you are trying to prepare for.

I go with the one you are most comfortable using.
As for myself at the bed side is a revolver and a flash light for many of the reasons given above. In the morning the revolver goes in to a vault and my day time carry comes out. This is very often a 1911 of one type or another if I am leaving the house for the day, otherwise it is often a drop in pocket gun.

Both! I have a revolver and semi in the zombie night attack kit. Seriously, I have both. I will go for the semi first and dependent on circumstances, give the revolver to the significant others. The SOs like the revolvers.
