I never knew they made a 640 in .38 spec.. As broke as I am I hadda have it. 98% $300. I never liked 640 cauase of 3" barrel. This one is 1 7/8" I guess. Smooth wood grips.

Tamara:

No bad rap on longer barrel, just personal preference, as I grew up with 36's and 40's. I won't shoot a J frame .357 as I am a sissy. My carry gun is a .40 Sig 239. But I pickup any S&W I can as most seem to be hanging on to 'em.

Oh, mine's a .38 Spl-only, too, although the Performance Center laser-etched "TESTED FOR +P+" along the inside of the bottom edge of the frame window at the same time as they installed the 2 7/8" CarryComp barrel, so it probably could survive having the chambers reamed to .357 Mag length, as long as I didn't make a hobby out of shooting the stuff. Due to its unique back-story, however, I'll probably leave it stock.

I had the 357 Mod 640 but 86ed it for a 9mm 940. The long grips and heavy weight precluded pocket carry. :(

Then they came out with Scandium. Got onea those too.

Mine has same +p+ etche.

Cool! I'd never seen it on a .38 640 before, but now that you mention it, I haven't exactly clapped eyes on too many .38 640's. As you pointed out above, they made those things for like about five minutes before switching to the .357 variant...

My 640 in .38 special engraved with "tested for +p+" is my always gun. Always available.

It's smaller and lighter than the current .357 magnum version of the 640.

Immediately upon learning that S&W was magnumizing the steel J frames, I bought the last .38 Special 640 in town. I had the action tuned and the gun about 80% engraved. A nice coat pocket gun, but my old airweight M38 still goes in the pants pocket.

Wheelguns like the M640/.38Special are at a premium around here. Lately, asking prices for used samples are in the $400 range. :(

You did well!

Gun sales are down around here. I know they usually are in the summer time, but this year exceptionally so. I shop at one store pretty regularly. Sometimes I best him in a deal, sometimes he gets me. Tag on gun was $400 but it was my turn to win. I offered $300 and he took it. More than likely he gave somebody $175 or $200 for it in a trade anyway.

Funny thing was I walked in store and said to myseff: "Seff, we are lookin for a J frame an thats it." You rarely see em for sale around here. An there it was.

Popeye, rarely around Lake Co.? Hmmm, come on down I-65; they are all over the place 3 counties south of you. Come on down here for the Friends of NRA dinner in September, I'm donating a couple for the raffles.

Had a 640 3" Carried it as back up during grad skuls. Think it was only +P rated. Not that it matter as I only carried Fed Nyclads in it!:D

You got a great deal, sir. One for you.
