629 Tapered Barrel or Not

What are your thoughts' on a S&W 629 4" "mountain gun" with
a tapered barrel vs. the "standard" model.

In terms of durability, balance, recoil, etc.

For shootin' or packin'?

Shootin' -- get the standard barrel or, better yet, the Classic w/full lug.

Packin' -- MG wins hands down and saves your back as well as you a**.

What is a classic with Full Lug, how can you identify that feature.

What type of weight difference is between the MG vs. Standard.

My typical carry will be holstered and hiking. It will have a 4'' barrel so I can get it out of rig fast.

I'm not sure what the weight concern is as I will have lots of
gear on me anyway?

Get a Smith & Wesson 629 Classic with a 5" full
lug barrel. Easily identified by the marking's
on the right side of the barrel. The 5" barrel
will give you a lil' mo horsepower (fps).

IMHO. the Mountain Gun at 39oz. is just the ticket. I would recommend getting it in .44MAG as you can practice with .44SPL and then carry it in .44MAG. It size, power and accuracy make it ideal for your application as that's what it was designed for. You can also use it for a glove nox gun and a nightstand piece. Best....dewey
