629 Classic accuracy

Have owned this 629 Classic with the 6 1/2" barrel for almost 2 years now. The accuracy has been superb! Plus it does not take a lot of experimenting to get an accurate load. Have used various jacketed bullets - Rem. 180 JHP , Sierra 220 FPJ Match , Hornady 240 XTP and Sierra 300 JSP. I want to start trying some cast bulltets.

There seems to be much Smith bashing these days but when they can mass produce a gun that shoots this well they have one very satisfied customer in myself! The 6 shot groups shown were fired at 25 yards from a very solid bench rest position. The scope is a Leupold 2X with Leupold rings and a Millett base. The 29 Classic I owned a few years back also displayed similar accuracy.

All in all, the Smith 44's and Smiths in general have easily been the best shooting centerfire revolvers I have had the pleasure to own!

I definitely have to agree with you when talking quality. I really love Smith's. I have a 686 plus 4", a 36-1 Nickel 3", a 60 worked over by Teddy Jacobsen, and a 6906. They are all tremendous firearms. Very accurate and the right combination of just what you need to get the job done. To me they are the Swiss chronometer of the firearms world. Hey Rugers, Dan Wessons and Taurus are nice too, but when you are talking double action revolvers, for me your talking Smith.

I was really disheartened by the sell out of our rights by Smith & Wesson and Bill Ruger (voluntary limited mag capacities, no easy to conceal firearms because a sporting man has no use for one) among others, and I have to commend firms like Taurus for standing tough. When I first heard the news about Smith I didn't buy any more of their new production guns. Now with the management change over, my decision has changed.

For me its been really difficult because I would hate to see a great American company like S&W to go out of business for the foolish decisions made by a cabal of gutless management.

S&W model 629

I recently bought a new S&W 629 Classic with the 5" bbl. I am very happy with the quality, workmanship and accuracy. Also within the last 6 months I bought a new 686 and a new 65.
I am very satisfied with all these new revolvers. I also have several more S&W handguns of various ages including a couple of autoloaders. I have never had a problem with one of these products.

I too am glad that S&W is again an "American Company" and those who still do not buy S&W's new products are just missing out on good, high quality handguns.

And I concurr. Hope folks don't mind me posting this photo, again.

This Smith 629 dates to the late '80's. It has had plenty of full power loads through it, but still shoots terrific.

I also have a later M29 Classic with 5" barrel, which is a fairly rare piece, I understand. I may add a 5" 629, just for kicks.

Hodgdon Lil'Gun works great in the .44, I was showing 1420 fps over the chrono with this combo.

I happened upon that same loading for my pre-sellout 5" 629 classic and have experienced very good accuracy. Not quite equal to yours but mine wears no scope.

Nice group at 50, I envy your eyesight, at 50 yards and having to wear bi focal glasses, I would be hoping to hit the target at that range with my 29-3.:D

My 629 Classic has also been superbly accurate with just about any .44 Mag load I have tried. I've tried 180-240 gr bullets, and everything has averaged around 3/4" at 25 yards. I think they are fine revolvers, and I wouldn't hesitate in buying another!

S&W 629's

Okay for 'light-duty' shootin' :D

Know what I mean?
(If you don't take a look at how long a 345g .429" bullet is.)
