629-5 8.375" info?

I found a deal ($515) on a new 629-5 with an 8 3/8 barrel. It does not have a full underlug, is this good or bad?I plan to use it for deer hunting. The serial # is CDZ 5913.Would this be a round or square butt. What is the difference between a -5 & -6.I was able to lay it away no strings attached so I figured I would do a little research. Is this a good price? Thanks

An underlug has 0 to do with strength. IOW, the underlug length does not matter. Price seems to be in line. You can use 44 Magnum, 44 Special and 44 Russian in a 44 Magnum. Holsters are a little hard to find for 8 and 3/8" barrels. What is neat about that barrel length is they work well drilled and tapped for scopes.

The extra weight of the long barrel will lessen the recoil somewhat over the shorter barrels, but not by much.

I have shot a 3" Lew Horton. They are an eye opener! Sharp recoil. I have 6" and 6.5" N frames that are better weighted forward. They still require realignment of the sights each trigger pull. I have shot a 8 and 3/8" barrel a few times. The weight is forward and lessens recoil substanially over a 3". I could tell some difference with a scope, the longer barrel and Pachmayr Gripper rubber grips.

I wouldn't. I have had ported barrels, I did not notice much less recoil, the maintenance was increased, the barrel was essentially weakened and the pyrotechnics were nice at night but, blinding. I don't have anything good to say for Magnaporting. Your money.

Your new S&W model 629-5 .44 magnum was made between February
and March of 2000. I have a 5" Classic, with serial CDN XXXX.

Best Wishes,

If it was made in 2000 it is a RB. The SB went out in the mid-90's.
The -5 was the beginning of MIM parts and the frame mounted firing pin. Can't help you with the -6 models.

Thanks for all the info.I realize some of these questions seem dumb but the gun is in a shop 2.5 hrs away. They have a sweet layaway program 10% down and then just monthly payments of 10% of the remaining balance with no time limit or penalty for canceling and you can pay on it by phone http://www.jayssportinggoods.com/ It is a sweet way to save up for a gun.I sure hope it is a round butt due to my small hand size,I probably should have pulled the grips off but live and learn. Thanks again
