625(acp)

So don't flame me if this has been discussed B4:
I'm in the process of getting a 625 from 1989 in 5" and ACP. My question to all you shooters and plinkers is; what accuracy should I expect from the gun. I see it has a "partridge" sight, like my 14, so theoretically it
should shoot , or at least point the same. The recoill from a .45acp from a revolver should be minimul...
I have the 625 MG in .45Colt and an old 25-2 in LC as well.
Any help is apperciated.....:)

The one I've had opportunity to shoot has been a pussy cat to shoot. Very accurate, very mild & a stereotypical S&W DA trigger. My only complaint is the moon clips...you'll need a bunch & you'll need some patience loading & emptying them.

Kinda hard to tell till it's done and tested.
May be a tack driver first crack out of the box.
May take a while to find it's favorite load.

No easy answer.

Nice revolver. The large frame and smooth trigger make it easy to shoot well.Recoil is mild and the moon clips make for a fast reload.I'm on my way out the door to work in a few minutes, and the 625 is on my hip, loaded with Silvertips.

My 625 sounds identical to yours and it's a real tack driver. If you reload, I'd recommend getting some 45 auto rim brass; it'll make life at the range much more convenient than using moon clips. If you want more power you can rechamber the 625 to 460 Rowland and get near 44 mag performance while still being able to shoot all the 45acp variants.

I recommend you buy a de-mooning tool (~$20 @ Dillons and elsewhere). Smith 625s have the reputation of being very fine, very accurate N frames.

Have the same gun. Verry accurate and soft shooting. I surprised myself at the last NE TFL pistol shoot by shooting high score on the police pistol course set up by Ray WoodrowIII.

I'm on the right, don't be frightened by the mugshot. My 625 is visible in my right hand, target with large hole in the middle in my left.:D

My $.02. Get full moon clips and a california comp Works demooner tool. Loading is easy, unloading is a snap with the tool (or I should say a squeeze)

My 625 has a Millett rear sight, didn't care for the *$* sight. Front sight has an epoxy insert in red to help my eyes out.

M625

The 625 is an outstanding gun... very accurate and reliable as well.

It is however, not as nice as the old M25 1955 Target revolver from S&W. The old gun had a better trigger and smoother action out of the box. Of course a trip to the custom shop can fix those things.

My 625

I have the S&W 625 model of 1989 with the 4" barrel. I didn't expect it to be that accurate because of the short sight radius. Another myth exploded! This is the most accurate gun I own, revolver or automatic. It routinely shoots one hole groups at 25 feet, hand held. Small holes. Preferred load is 4.6 B with 200 lswc, but really shoots everything well. Trigger was superb right out of the box. The only modification I made was to have the cylinder holes chamfered, so the moon clips now go in faster than a speedloader. At first I thought the moon clips would be a bother, but the demooning tools make it easy.

It's here!!!!

Well I got it home and off to the range I raced***

Here are the results of a 20 minute (had to go back to work:mad: ) Range session.
I used some old military ball at 25 yards and 2 hands...
You guys were right, these guns are accurate!

Nice "New Toy"!!! Welcome to the world of .45 ACP REVOLVERS!!! I've currently got four 625's in .45 ACP--three five-inch barreled, full-lug guns, and a four-inch barreled Springfield Armory Commemorative in the "Mountain Gun" configuration...they are ALL among my most-favorite handguns, and the two five-inchers that are marked as Models of 1989 are also supremely accurate...moreso than my 1988-marked gun. BTW, try some 185-gr. SWC "Softball" target loads...about like wadcutters in a .38 recoil-wise, and about as accurate, too!!!....mikey357

Jeff,

I've got 5 different 625's, 4 in .45 acp. Mine have all turned out to be much more accurate than I can hold.

I predict you'll find your's to be the same.

Good Luck...

Joe
