617 Front Sight

Looking to swap out the stock front sight on my S&W 617. Thinking perhaps a hi-vis green. I have a local smith I trust to do the job. Anything in particular I should be concerned of before changing this out?

If you want to go a cheaper, non-permanent route just paint the edge of the sight with flourescent paint. I found that my eyes tend to like white best. It is cheap and a rag with acetone will wipe it off if you change your mind.

I did the exact same thing on my 617, and sort of regretted it. Not because it wasn't nice, but it didn't help much indoors due to lack of ambient light, and I hadn't had a problem shooting outdoors, though it is bright on a nice day.

In the end I spent a bunch of money without accomplishing a whole lot.

I do like the SP-101s with fiber optic sight, but that's a different topic.

I used red enamel Testors model paint on the front sight of my 617. I taped off the edges with blue painters tape and brushed on the red paint. It works good and I might try another color. Testors makes many different colors including Flourescent colors so you can easily experiment. You can afford to try different colors because each 1/4 oz. bottle is about $2. I would estimate that you would probably be able to paint about 617 617 front sights with one bottle.;)

Thanks, I might just try this. If I don't like it I can simply go with the original plan.

I have the HiViz green on my 617. I installed it myself. The only problem is the rear sight blade notch is not deep enough to see the entire green dot. You either have to get a different/deeper rear blade OR get used to it OR file the notch deeper. Aside from that , I highly recommend it.
