617 aluminum cylinder question

What is the problem with aluminum cylinder's? Do they not hold up? Are they dangerous? Should you use certian ammo with an aluminum cylinder?

617 Aluminum cylinder

I have a S&W 617 that shoots better than I can hold. It shoots more like a rifle than a handgun. I use the Federal bulk packs from Wally World and it seems to really like them. I don't think that S&W would use just any kind of aluminum in the cylinders. I would think they are very safe or S&W wouldn't do it! Just to much liability if the cylinder was weak. 22's don't build up a lot of pressure either. :)

I bought a four inch 617 on a fluke at a gun show. One of the best purchases I've made in the last ten years.

They are fine for a .22. The only issues that I have ever heard with aluminum cylinders were with the original Model 12's. These were .38 Special K-frames. Apparently they could grenade under the wrong conditions.

A 617 would be a highly desirable revolver with either the steel or the aluminum cylinder.
